News and Notes
2003 Parish Good Friday services were held in Bison at 7:30pm on April 27. The Bison United Methodist Women met April 10th at the church at 7:30pm. Kelly McCulley from Sunflower Diversified Services was the guest speaker. All ladies of the Parish were invited. Program Council met April 7 at 6:30pm and Administrative Council at 7:30pm. On Easter morning, April 20th, Sunrise services were held at 7:00am at the church with a breakfast following. Thank you! to everyone who helped make the Bison United Methodist Women's collection of clothing for Larned State Hospital a big success. And a special Thank you! to Lester Seuser for taking the clothing to Larned. The new sound system purchased with Memorial Funds has improved the clarity of sound in the sanctuary, overflow rooms, and the basement. A microphone has been added on the lectern, and the portable mic has been replaced. New lamps were also placed on the lectern and pulpit. Many thanks! to all who made this addition to our worship experience possible. On February 23, Mary Meckenstock from Hays preached in Bison. Chuck Carpenter from Great Bend held services on March 9 and on March 23, Brenda Legleiter from McCracken preached. Rev. Pat Ault-Duell held the April 6 services in Bison. Bison UMC held a "Warm Hearts" Soup Supper on February 16 at 5:30pm. All who attended enjoyed great food and fellowship. The soup supper was hosted by the Program Council. On Febrary 9, Bison UMC and Otis UMC welcomed to their morning worship services the Haviland Christian Church Mime Group, a special group of young women sharing the gospel through drama. Bison UMC enjoyed the music of a special quartet on Sunday, January 26. Rush county locals Gary, Humphrey, Jim Rothe, and Ron Hanhardt, joined by Jay Wilson of Great Bend, shared their musical gifts at the service. Thank you all! Blessings! 2002 The Annual Parish Church Conference was held at 7:00pm on November 20th at the Bison United Methodist Church. All churches of the Parish worshipped and celebrated Holy Communion together on Sunday, November 3rd at the Parish-wide Worship Service at Bison United Methodist Church. Brunch was served beginning at 9:00am and Worship Services began at 10:30am. The Parish Choir met for rehearsal at 9:00am before worship. All members of the parish were invited to join in song. On October 10th at 7:30pm the Bison United Methodist Women hosted a guest speaker from Habitat for Humanity in Great Bend. LaCrosse and Otis UMW were invited to attend this interesting program about mission in our area. A Christian Mission "mini-school" was held on October 4 and 5 at Camp Lakeside. A new Young Women's Bible Study of Jesus and the Courageous Women of the Bible was begun in October. Bison UMW Circles met on April 11, 7:00pm at LaCrosse UMC for a special program with Jovita Nwogwugwu. Thank you! to all the persons that contributed clothing for the Larned State Hospital. To Carrie Thostrup and the Choir for all the special music during Lent, Holy Week & Easter. To Jon & Carrie Tholstrup and Ted Bannister for the reading of the Passion story on Palm Sunday. To the youth for leading the Easter Sunrise Service. To Program Council and all the individuals who helped prepare the Easter breakfast. Renovations Continue! Under the tireless and creative leadership of Zane Edwards the basement continues to look better and better. Many thanks to Zane and his right-hand assistant Ila Mae and everyone else who has assisted with the sheet-rock hanging, plaster scraping, and painting. It looks great! Good food and fellowship was enjoyed
Sunday, February 24! The Parish and Bison Community were welcomed
to the Youth Mission Trip Fundraiser. It was a Potato Bar at the
Bison UMC at noon. A Free-Will offering went to support the youth
group's summer mission trips.
2000-2001 Thank you! to all the "Green Hangers" who got the church ready for Advent and Christmas. It looked beautiful! The Sunday School children and youth rehearsed for the Christmas program on December 2 & 9 during Sunday School time. Dress rehearsal was on December 15 and the Program was held on the 16th during morning worship. Bison UMW is collecting gifts for Larned State Hospital between now and November 25. A list of suggested items can be found in the church entry. Thanks! to Don Wood and Zane Edwards, patient panel-installers and workers extraordinare. Check out the new look in the balconies and the transformation of the South Sunday School room. A big Thanks! to the trustees and all the women who helped with the painting! It looks great! The Sunday School children especially extend their thanks! Bison UMW invites all the women of the Parish to their meeting on October 11, 2001, 7:30pm at the Bison UMC to hear Pastor Marilyn Christmore speak about "Quality at the End of Life." Sunday School for pre-school and elementary is held each week. Kids attend worship through Children's time then go to class. Youth 6-12th grade will have a Sunday School class at the same time on the following Sundays: September 30, November 4 & 18. Vacation Bible School! August 13-17, 9:30 to 11:30am. Bison kids ages pre-school through completed 4th grade from had a great week on the "Good Neighbor" Tour. They be visited a different bibliical city each day. Thanks! to Carrie, Barb, Dorothy, Taberie, Sarah, Ashley, Josh, Kathy, Carol, Donna, Lavina, JoAnne, Ida Mae, and Ila Mae for helping out! Young Couple & Family Social Evening on Saturday, September 22 at 7:00pm. Bring a dessert to share and a favorite game. Kids & youth welcome! bring friends and neighbors! "NEW" Sunday School classes for kids and youth get under way on September 16. The youth class will meet on the Sundays when the youth group is not scheduled to meet. Pre-school/Elementary class meets every week. Talk with Pastor Kathy if you feel called to teach! Bison Community Picnic - Sunday, August 26, was held at the City Park at 6:30pm and was Pot-luck. The church provided watermelon for dessert. Thanks! to Jon and Carrie for picking out the watermelon and to the program council members and others who contributed to the event. THANKS! to all who attended the "shower" and brunch for UM Youthville. The donations will benefit many youth in Youthville programs. Former Otis-Bison pastor Doug Hasty goes this year from Ness City to Oberlin-Prairie Chapel. Rev. Kay Kinkead has taken medical leave. Rev. Ed Friesen is taking an appointment in the Kansas East Conference. Many thanks! to all of the busy workers at the church who have painted, replaced ceilings, and accomplished many other repairs. Your work and dedication is deeply appreciated..."workers" were honored in church and at a reception after the worship service on June 3. The annual Mother-Daughter Salad Supper was held Sunday, May 6 at the church. An enjoyable time was had by all who attended. The Bison UMC has responded to the UM Bishops' Hope for the Children of Africa campaign, donating the equivalent of $10 per member for a school in Liberia sponsored by the Kansas West Conference. Clothing Drive for Larned State Hospital ran until Sunday, March 11. The next parish-wide worship service will be Sunday, April 1st at the LaCrosse UMC. Worship will be at 10:30am followed by a pot-luck lunch. The LaCrosse UMC will provide the meat/main dish. Parishioners are invited to bring side dishes, desserts, etc...And if you like to sing, watch upcoming bulletins for information about Parish choirs for the worship service. There was a mission study with Jane Bandy, at the Parish UMW gathering at LaCrosse UMC, Saturday, February 17, 10:00am to 3:00pm. Lunch was included. Special Thanks!!! to Rev. Kevin Seuser for filling in at the last minute for me on Sunday, February 25. You were a Godsend in a time of need! Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with us. --Pastor Kathy. Thank you! for the beautiful manger, ornaments and Christmas decorations... for the handmade Advent/Christmas banners...for the donation of the new Christmas tree...everyone who did such a great job organizing the picture taking for the directory...for everyone who worked so hard on the wonderful Christmas program - adults and youth alike! What a blessing! Bison UMW afternoon circle met at 10:30am on November 9th. During this time the women cleaned the kitchen. The evening circle will met at 7:30pm on the 9th. Christmas gifts for Larned State Hospital were to be at the church by November 26. A BIG Bison thank you to the many workers and painters busy during October at the church. Your labor and efforts are a blessing to us all.
