Overview of the Expansion Project at RHUMC
Who
Round Hill United Methodist Church,
- Located on the West side of Church Street
- One of four churches located within the Town of Round Hill
Why
Our expansion is based upon our need to serve:
- To serve our Christian call to witness,
- To serve our growing congregation
- To accommodate our growing Sunday School class sizes
- To serve our growing Neighborhoods and surrounding Communities
- To serve the growing needs within our Missions and Outreach programs in
and around our Community, our Country, and indeed Globally
We, the members of the RHUMC Building Committee were given the
responsibility to prepare a proposal for facilities to accommodate the
current growth of the church and the anticipated growth that is taking
place in the area surrounding the town of Round Hill. The proposal is
to be based on the concept of remaining in our current location on
Church Street and making the best use of the church’s property.
How
To accomplish this we set out to draw from our surroundings
- By blending with the Communities style and Architecture
- Loudoun Street Mosaic, trend in architectural styles
- Features seen that are designed into our project:
- Dormers
- Stone foundations & facades
- Clapboard & similar styled siding
- Metal roofs
- Repeating architectural features in our 100+ year old Sanctuary
- Arched windows
- Clapboard style siding (still in white)
- Similar roof design/shape
- By listening to our Neighbors, we have incorporated several of their
expressed desires
- Improved the facade looking out onto Locust Street
- Changed it from looking like the unadorned rear of a business to an
inviting entrance with covered entry
- Incorporated low level, low height lighting for the parking area
- Storm Water Management Plan.
There were two alternatives given to RHUMC
- The first and least expensive detains the water onsite and releases it
over time to accommodate for the additional runoff
- The second option is to pipe the runoff underground along Locust and
Loudoun Street to an adequate drainage channel just past and along
Mystic Lane. This option is more costly but is our 1st choice as it
provides the NW Quadrant of the Town of Round Hill with SWM (more on
this later)
- Plantings
- Hedges along borders
- Screening hedges/tree rows along building on Loudoun Street side
- Trees planned along Locust Street and within the parking area
- By not disturbing the look of our younger but still some 60+ year old
Parsonage building on Church Street

When
A brief timeline of from where we have come and to where we are
headed.
- 1996-1997 Long Range Planning Committee study completed
- Jun 1997 One Acre parcel purchased from Mr. Barry along Locust
adjoining the Church property
- Spring of 1998, The Building Committee was established & began
planning
- Spring of 1999 Robson Group Architects, Inc was hired
- 16 September 2000, Applied to the Town of Round Hill for “Special
Exemption”
- September 2000 Bowers & Assoc brought on board for Site Plan
evaluation and subsequent Storm Water Management Analysis
- 24 October 2000, RHUMC came before the Town of Round Hill Planning
Commission
- November 2000 Bowers and Associates completed a Preliminary Storm
Water Management Analysis
- July 2001 CTI Consultants were contracted to complete a Geotechnical
Investigation & Evaluation (Soil samples & soil boring tests)
- Fall of 2001, RHUMC requested their “special exemption” request be
postponed due to internal church affairs. The Town of Round Hill agreed
to table it indefinitely until such time as it was requested by RHUMC
to be placed once again on their agenda.
There are two proffers in planning for the Town of Round Hill that
can be considered noteworthy. RHUMC has a Storm Water Management (SWM)
plan analysis that mirrors a portion of the Town of Round Hill’s newly
acquired SWM Master Plan, section 6 (that portion which encompasses the
northwest quadrant of the town). We are willing to build the SWM plan
designed for our project or proffer to the Town of Round Hill a sum of
money go toward building section 6 of the Town of Round Hill’s SWM
Master Plan, on a timeline so as not to delay our project. This would
allow the town to build the system to their specifications thus
allowing it to be completely coordinated with the rest of the Town of
Round Hill’s SWM Master Plan. The second proffer we are considering
would be to proffer the Town a section of land along Church Street and
adjoining Loudoun Street that would allow for the widening and
improvement of the entrance into Church Street from Loudoun Street.
We desire to answer any questions you may have. We also ask if there
is some concern you might have that you contact us. Any specific
questions we receive we will endeavor to answer. Questions in writing
will help us help you, as messages passed from one to another do not
always reach the intended recipient as the question was originally
asked.
We also desire you prayers and your support as we improve our
facilities in a way we think will also benefit our community.
