Rockville United Methodist
Church
Missions and Social Concerns
Whenever we have an opportunity,
let us work for the good of all ... Galatians 6:10
We display our faith in Christ by
reaching out and helping others in need. A portion of the money we give
to our church is used to help the United Methodist Church meet the needs
in our New England Conference area as well as across the country and around
the world. There are many opportunities to serve and to share our gifts
with others:
Community Outreach and Support
- Habitat for Humanity
As a Habitat Covenant Church, we support the Rockville
Chapter of the Hartford
Area Habitat for Humanityby providing housing
for Habitat workcamps at local sites, and by participating in local funding
raising efforts such as the Habitat Bike-A-Thon, which takes place each August in Manchester, Connecticut. If you want to help
out, email the Hartford office. And check out Habitat
for Humanity International.
- Covenant to Care
-Working
with Covenant to Care in the local community, our usual summer project is to
collect basic materials to fill backpacks for school students. There will
be a collection container in the Narthex of the church through August.
TriTown Shelter and Pantry
- We support the Pantry with food collections and donations throughout
the year, and we have offered support to the Shelter through participation
in the Good Friday Walk which contributes a third of its funds to the TriTown
Shelter.
Cornerstone Soup Kitchen
- A team from Rockville UMC prepares a meal at the soup kitchen
every 7 weeks.
Good Friday Walk
Local
churches come together to walk 20 miles through Rockville, Vernon and out
to Windsorville, each year on Good Friday. Funds raised on the Walk go
to the TriTown Shelter and to Sharing, Inc. which ministers to areas of
rural poverty in the Mississippi Delta Region. For more information, contact rumcoffice@sbcglobal.net.
Global Concerns
-
Nicaragua Covenant
This
is a special mission of the New England Conference. Read the biography
of one of the missionaries from the New England Conference, Belinda
Forbes. Rockville United Methodist Church is participating in a
program to support a designated missionary, and we have chosen Belinda
Forbes as our missionary. Belinda's biography and those of other missionaries
are available through the General
Board of Global Ministries Missionary Biography pages.
As part of our covenant at RUMC, we continually collect supplies to send to Nicaragua. The next trip down will be in September, 2001. If you have donations of medical and health supplies, please bring them to the church before Sept. 9th.

Blanket donations to honor Mothers
On Mother's Day, we honor the women in our lives who cared for
and nurtured us by donating toward the purchase of blankets to be used
for those who need shelter and comfort.
-
Tools of Hope to honor Fathers
The Tools of Hope project provides hand tools for
cultivation, pipes for wells, pumps and windmills, seeds and seedlings,
tools of learning to overcome illiteracy - all of the basic tools for self-sufficiency,
through donations made to honor Fathers or other loved ones
-
Appalachia
Service Project
For 13 years, the church has sent teams to
participate in this youth service mission which seeks to provide decent
housing for people in the Appalachian region. ASP centers are found in
Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, and Tennessee. For additional information
