Text Box: Southwest Texas Conference to Celebrate 150 Years of Ministry

The Southwest Texas Conference (SWTC) will begin a year of celebration of ministry on Nov. 30 in Austin (First United Methodist Church, 1201 Lavaca St.).
The SWTC began as the Rio Grande Mission Conference in 1858. Life and ministry was very dangerous then: It was unsafe for a single man to ride on the prairies only fifteen miles west of San Antonio. We itinerant here carry our rifles and six-shooters as regularly as we do our Bibles and Hymnbooks. —Rev. H.G. Horton, 1860, on the danger from Indians.
The challenges are different today, but the ministry remains. Go to the Southwest Texas Conference website for details as the year rolls on.
