Frances
E. Fellows was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church
for nearly 60 years. She served as president of United Methodist
Women and worked diligently in furthering the music and
worship programs for the church. She sang in the choir until
well into her 80s.
Frances grew up in Keokuk, Iowa, and
earned B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Iowa.
She taught public school music before her marriage to Kenneth
Fellows in 1935. They had four children.
She served on the Wesley Foundation Board of the University
of Houston and was a longtime volunteer at the Houston Speech
and Hearing Center. She was an active member of the PEO
sisterhood for 72 years.
Although she was identified with a
number of other charitable organizations, she gained her
greatest personal satisfaction from making herself available
to friends in special need. She was a woman of marked intelligence
and many talents, recognized for her calm judgment and understanding.
Always one to delve into new interests,
at the age of 87, she entered the world of computers and
became a faithful email correspondent with friends and family
around the world for the rest of her life. She learned to
surf the net, to find books in the Houston Public Library
they didn't know they had, and to download recipes as well
as crossword puzzles from the New York Times. At 91, judging
her computer too slow, she upgraded to a new one, which
she installed herself. She would be both pleased and amused
that a website has been established with her memorial funds.
