Reconciliation United Methodist Outreach

One thing about Reconciliation that immediately drew me in was its emphasis on social justice. Though many congregations pay lip service to the idea of social equality, here I saw it enacted in the everyday lives of its members.

The church is not an island, insular and self-sufficient, but an ocean whose waves spread God's love near and far. Through its outreach programs, Reconcilliation UMC is committed to spreading the ideals of tolerance, justice and compassion throughout the community. Below is a sampling of how our ministry reaches the greater community:

• Racial Dialogue Groups
• Active with Durham C.A.N. (Congregations, Associations,
and Neighborhoods – a grass roots organizing effort in the larger community of Durham)
• Interfaith Hospitality Network: housing homeless families
• DCIA: Durham Congregations in Action
• Ministry to Durham County Detention Center (City Jail)
• Disciple Bible Study in State Prison
• Work Teams for Disaster Relief
• Assistance to Needy Families
• Interracial Summer Day Camp on Diversity
• Hispanic Ministry
• Ministry to Refugees
• Annual Latino Health Fair
• Durham Crop Walk for the Hungry

The mission of our new church, to intentionally seek to include all races and all cultural backgrounds, is most needed in our country and world today! God's people come in all colors with different ethnic backgrounds and we should strive to love, understand, and honor each other for those differences. We can be stronger as a country if we harness and embrace our differences. We believe that membership in a church with this mission and vision can make a difference in the society that our children inherit. Our hope is to help build a society of intelligence over ignorance, good over evil, love over hate and peace over war. We want to help the church be a force for change in our community.
