In 1887 Erastis Smith, Ravenna's
founder, gave a building site to the Methodist Church. The life of a church
is more than a building. In 1873 - 1877, the people of the area were served
by early circuit minister. In 1887, The Reverend A.J. Thornton, organized
the church after being appointed by the Bishop. The services were held
in the afternoon in the Congregational Church at this time. In 1888
Reverend William Crouthers was
appointed as minister and the congregation had grown to 25 members.
The church purchased the first Ravenna school building. This school building was made into a parsonage, and was located at 619 Alba Avenue. In 1889 they purchased the lot at 617 Alba Avenue and built the first Methodist Church in Ravenna, which was dedicated February 16, 1890.
On January 29, 1950, a fire of unknown origin burned the church to the ground, only the electric organ, and a few small items were saved. During the time of the new church being built, services were held at the City Auditorium. The new church was located at 502 Grand Avenue, next to the parsonage, located at 504 Grand Avenue. The members of the church volunteered their services to construct the building, which was dedicated, May 11, 1952. In 1978, a new sanctuary was built, seating 120, which was made necessary due to the increasing membership.
The past several years a new youth program has been started for children from Kindergarten through sixth grade. This is held after school and many children of the community are being introduced to the Lord.
The Little Bluejay Preschool started in 1987, for children in the community ages 4 and 5. The Preschool operates under the Administrative Board, with members of the Board forming the Preschool Board. The school is in session four days each week for two sessions. The enrollment can be 12 per session, and is a real success.
God is blessing this church and
the whole community of Ravenna, through the Church's ministry.
