Methodism got its start in Wolcott with small groups and class meetings held in private homes, mostly under lay leadership in the first half of the 19th century.  The congregation had come together sufficiently to construct a building in 1855, the same structure in use today.  Notations from that time proudly note a seating capacity of 300 people!  It must be true that folks were a tad smaller in those early days...!

Along with a sister church in North Wolcott ("up the branch"), the Methodists thrived in Wolcott throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  The Flood of 1927, followed by the Great Depression, impacted these congregations and their farming communities heavily.  Nevertheless, both congregations remained vital for many years.
The North Wolcott Methodist Church was finally discontinued in 1983/84.  The Wolcott United Methodist Church in the village continues to worship and participate in the larger connectional ministries of education and mission outreach of the United Methodist Church.  Over the years beloved lay members and pastors have come and gone.  But the spirit of Jesus Christ still gathers with us on Sunday mornings in Wolcott!
