Mission trip to Redbird Mission in Kentucky

In July, 2006, a group representing Pleasant View United Methodist Church went on a mission trip to the Appalachia region of eastern Kentucky.  Members of the group ranged in age from young children to seniors.  The group worked on several projects coordinated by Red Bird Mission, a United Methodist outreach located in Beverly, Kentucky.

One project consisted of repairing and weatherproofing a trailer home belonging to a disabled man and his family.

We framed in and insulated the end of the trailer where drafty windows had been before.

We also replaced and recovered a rotted kitchen floor and weatherproofed the windows to prevent further damage.

Another project was installing soffits and fascia at the Dewall Senior Citizen Center.

Members of our group also washed school buses at the mission school, cleaned the mission grounds, and painted a home.  As we worked, we got to know members of other workgroups from churches around the country.  We also became better aware of the needs of people living in this area, which is one of the most economically depressed parts of the United States.  The trip challenged us to think about how our congregation could work to meet the needs of people in our own community.
