The Heritage of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church

The church had its beginnings with the first settlers to migrate to this area after Alabama was opened for settlement in l819.  Early services were held under brush arbors until the first church house of logs was built about 1/4 mile west of the present church.   For a better supply of water, the church later moved a short distance south to Ragsdale Spring and this log structure served both as church and school. About 1843, Margaret Prude donated the present church site and rallied Methodist interest inviting Rev.  Robert A. Smith from Elyton to preach. A third church building was constructed and named Pleasant Hill Methodist Church.  This soon became known as a Methodist area where the life of the school and church were closely interwoven, T'he sanctuary of the present structure was erected C. A. 1875 and the church has continued as a prominent Methodist bastion, enjoying a goodly heritage of church history beginning about 1830 and continuing up to the present.
