Text Box: Youth News
This past Sunday, Laura Meadows invited me to be part of her Hoover Belle ceremony. This is something that is a big accomplishment in her life and she wanted me to see a part of her life apart from our youth group. This is an example of what it means to me to be in youth ministry. Although I get to see the youth weekly, hear about their lives, and share with them the message of Christ, I relish the times when they want me to witness and be part of something near and dear to them. These events are as vast and unique as the youth taking part. It can range from an Eagle Scout ceremony, recital, high school graduation, or even a school lunch. It may seem uneventful or simple to someone else, but to me...it is the sign of a relationship. That is what ministry is all about in my eyes. I'm not good at being creative with my programs, coming up with gross relays, or even playing most of the games they want to play. I do it, but I know I am not good at it. I want my focus to be on my relationship with these teenagers and their relationship with God. Jesus' ministry was based on relationships with all sorts of people. When we begin to see people for who they are instead of what they are, we can start the Christ-like engagement with their souls. The souls of these young people are beautiful. Won't you join me and gaze upon the gift of their presence in our lives?

MINISTERS ON THE MOVE!

On Father's Day, June 17, Pleasant Hill will welcome a new minister and his family. Rev. Alan Head, Missy, Zac (16), Katy (14), and Kelsey (10), will be moving from Tuscaloosa. What a life-changing experience to move a family!

Bobby and Twink will be moving to a superannuate home, a home provided by the conference for retired ministers, located off 119 directly across from Heardmont Park. They face a new beginning jokingly called "Retirement."

Both of these families need our prayers. Please take a moment as a church family to send them a note and let them know that your thoughts and prayers are with them as they follow where God leads.

Text Box: Calling all Brass Players
I would like to put together a brass choir to play on July 1st during the 11am service. I have some Patriotic music written for brass that would be great for prelude music that Sunday.
If you play or played a brass instrument, (whether you still have your instrument or not), please contact me. We will put together some rehearsals in the month of June. I can probably round up some instruments for those of you that don't have an instrument or don't know what happened to your instrument.

We had a great time at Strike Fore on Sunday playing mini golf. Thanks to the adults that came along to help and to Paul Calhoun for driving the bus for us.
There will be no kid's Club this Sunday, May 13, because it is Mother's Day. We will resume again on Sunday, May 20.
On Wednesday, May 16, it is our Children's Talent Show! Everyone needs to make a reservation for this event so we know how much food to prepare. There will be an insert in the church bulletin this Sunday as well if you didn't get the chance to fill one out last Sunday. This is a catered meal supper, so I need some parents to help with cooking, serving, and cleaning up. Please let me know if you can be there to help. You can contact me.

Text Box: Upcoming Mission Opportunities
Eyeglasses/Cell Phone Collection – During the month of June we will be collecting old glasses and cell phones. It has been two years since we have collected. By now I am sure many of us have again accumulated out of service cell phones and eyeglasses that are just sitting around gathering dust. The Lion's Club will get the old eyeglasses cleaned and ready to be used by people in third world countries to help them see better. The cell phones are reprogrammed to only dial 911 and are given to battered women to assist them in calling for help. So begin getting your unused cell phones and eyeglasses together and look for the collection box in the Family Life Center on June 3.

Daisye's Place – A new mission outreach for us. Lynn Griffin has been working with Food World the last few months taking their unsalable products to the Urban Ministries for us. Recently he learned of Daisye's Place and carried $250.00 in groceries and some old baby beds to them. What is Daisye's Place? It is a place to assist women who were previously substance-dependent, to develop self-confidence, obtain employment, transportation and permanent housing, thereby decreasing the likelihood they will become welfare dependent - Daisye's Place provides them with an opportunity for a new beginning. Daisye's Place has many needs. We will be collecting for them in August/September. More information will be provided soon regarding items they need. So keep this in mind as you do cleaning to get rid of unwanted items. To learn more about Daisye's Place check out their web site www.daisyesplace.com.

Text Box: Historical Moment

In 1907, R. M. Vines wrote a series of articles for the Birmingham Ledger—a forerunner of the Birmingham News. These articles were on the history of Pleasant Hill School which Mr. Vines had attended as a child. The articles contained some of the early history of Pleasant Hill Methodist Church. Mr. Vines did not intend to write a history of the church but of the school, but as he so aptly put it, "The interest, influence and mission of both are so closely allied, that where one flourishes, the other can live." "It was customary for a community, as soon as it was strong enough, to build a meeting house, a school and a graveyard, usually all on one lot." So we find them all at Pleasant Hill.
Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and McAdory Schools have remained closely connected throughout their histories and remain so today.
We are grateful that Mr. Vines included as much as he did of the history of "The Methodist Church" in his articles.
