Pleasant Grove
1810 - 1900
|
From its beginning,
Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church has had a congregation of members who
have lovingly devoted much time and effort to the upkeep and expansion of
its facilities.
The first
Pleasant Grove Church was built around 1820. This log structure burned and
was replaced by a frame structure in about 1877. The present sanctuary is basically
this structure and has for its sills solid 12" x 12" yellow
poplar.

In 1941 a
hardwood floor was put in the sanctuary, and in about 1947, a basement was
dug under the sanctuary. Mules were used to dig the basement. The basement was
dug while church services were held in the church as it sat on stilts. A
concrete floor and walls were poured to form one large room, and a small
kitchen was built in one corner. Through the use of curtains the basement
was divided into Sunday School rooms.

The
educational building was started in 1960 which added six classrooms, two
restrooms, a choir area, and a large pulpit area.

In 1963, plans
were completed for remodeling of the sanctuary and other parts of the
church. This included lowering the ceiling in the sanctuary and the
installation of: dry wall, new windows, indirect lighting, and a new floor
in the basement, a new kitchen, and electric heat. New pews were bought by
families, church school classes and individuals.

Pleasant Grove
1966 - Present

A building
program, in 1968, included bricking of the sanctuary, a beautiful porch in colonial
style architecture, the addition of new sidewalks, extensive work on the
parking area, a beautiful 25-foot memorial steeple with cross, and numerous
other changes.

Since
1969, the sanctuary and some Sunday School rooms have been carpeted, the parking
lot enlarged and paved and air conditioning and heating system installed.
Over the
years the church has owned three different parsonages, with the last being
on highway 54.
If you
take a walk through the lovely old graveyard which sits on the right as you
face the church, on the head stones you will see numerous names of those
early Christians whose descendants still attend and lovingly care for the
church at Pleasant Grove.
