A Conversation About Old Pisgah

"Tell me of your church. Is it really quite old?

A hundred and fifty-five years I've been told "

"Yes, friend, far and wide, it is truly renown.

It's nearly as old as our capitol town"

"Is it grand, quite large? Made of marble and stone?

Does it sit on a hillside, majestic, alone?

Has it windows of glass, all rainbow's bright hues?

Are there soft velvet cushions in all of the pews?

Does the spire reach to Heavens for hundreds of feet?

Is the road to the church, then, a fine cobbled street? .

Is it like the Cathedrals of England and Spain?

Is it grand like them or is it more plain? "

"Oh, my friend, I must tell you 'tis humble and small.

A cathedral it doesn't resemble at all.

A long time ago, more than seven score years

These wilderness men with their "blood, sweat and tears"

Toiled early and late using just simple tools.

They took out the trees with bug chains pulled by mules.

The clerestory windows allowed in the light.

Oil lamps on the columns illumined the night.

Church members attended and worshipped and prayed.

Each other they loved. Now their memory won't fade.

The church celebrates the first Sunday in May

Homecoming is held on the church's birthday.

Then members and friends honor old Pisgah's past.

And we pray that for always old Pisgah will last. "

"Friend, you've told your tale well. Now my blessings I give

And truly, forever, old Pisgah will live. "
