Pleasant
Grove United Methodist Church is located in Northwest Florida in a traditional
southern setting of a picturesque wooded area where magnolia, pine and oak trees
abound.
Early Methodist
Church meetings were held in private homes until April 1963. It became apparent
to the Methodist District Superintendent that an actual need existed for the
establishment of a Methodist Church for the community of Pleasant Grove. It was
decided that the Pleasant Grove Elementary School could be utilized for services
until such time as a permanent church could be erected. Permission for the use
was requested and obtained from the Escambia County School Board for the use of
these facilities. The first worship service was held at the school on the Sunday
following Easter 1963. Charter Sunday Services were held August 4, 1963 and
fifty-two persons were received into the membership.
The
beautiful property that our Pleasant Grove Methodist Church is located on was
donated to the church and title was acquired on September 20, 1963.
With much hard work
and the efforts of so many, ground breaking for the Pleasant Grove Methodist
Church was held March 30, 1964. Our first worship service was conducted October
18, 1964.
On October 31, 1982, a
reunion was held with many of the charter members in attendance and highlighting
these festivities was the burning of the mortgage.
