07 May 22 -- Israel bombed Gaza -- targeting political leaders illegally.

On 5/20/07 the Israel government tried specifically to bomb Khalil al-Hayya in his home with an F-16.  This is called an illegal "political assassination" attempt and is condoned by Israeli leaders, but not by Congress.  Instead, 8 Palestinians died as innocent bystanders; many were rounded up as political prisoners; and walls are being erected to suffocate legal residents.

The volley-war is escalating, and we are in a position to try again to pressure both sides to return to peaceful negotiations.
On June 11 let us inform our representatives that the UMC supports an Arms Embargo of the Holy Land -- as per our General Conference resolution. [below]

We are responsible for sending our tax money in the form of Military Foreign Aid to
Israel which is
not using it as Congress requires.   Every year the Foreign Relations Committee must recertify that aid recipients are not restricting human rights. The democratically-elected Hamas/Fatah government of Palestine should be financially supported -- not forced into hiding!

Below is the forward from End the Israeli Occupation mobilization.  You can post paragraphs or info updates to this website by emailing to:  justpeace@usa.net

A press release could read as follows:
"A mainline Protestant church, the United Methodist Church, is calling for an Arms Embargo of the Middle East until peaceful negotiations take place again.  The recent escalation of civil wars in the Holy Land has inspired United Methodists to take action and mobilize pressure in Congress on Su & Mo June 10 - 11, 2007."

Volunteer on J10, Get Ticket to Cultural Night

We're less than three weeks away from the historic June 10-11 national mobilization to protest 40 years of Israel 's military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip.

We still need dozens of volunteers to help make this mobilization a success. Everyone who volunteers to help out will receive free admission to the June 10th cultural event.

It's not too late to sign-up to be a June 10th Volunteer or to sign-up for the DC Local Organizing Committee!

We need people to sign up as volunteers to help us the day-of June 10th. Please review the following tasks and if you have any questions, please contact Omar Masri. The tasks are:

1. Rally Set Up, Morning Shift (12:00AM-11:00AM max.), involves manual labor. We need to form a human chain to move the stage equipment to the grounds of the Capitol and have our Stage Technicians put it together! Sign-up here!

2. Rally Take Down, Afternoon Shift (4:00PM to 12:00PM max.), involves manual labor. After the Rally is done at 4:00 PM, the Stage Technicians will be taking apart the stage and we need a human chain to take the equipment off the Capitol grounds. Sign-up here!

3. Metro & Bus Greeters, Morning Shift (10:00AM-1:00PM). We need folks to greet out-of-towners coming in on busses from the pre-designated Metro arrival points of Greenbelt , Shady Grove, Vienna/Fairfax GMU, Branch Avenue , & Union Station and give them directions to the rally grounds from the Metro stations. We will be providing all the resources needed including Metro Maps, Rally Maps, etc. Contact Ashley Wilkinson to sign up or for more information!

4. Fundraising, Afternoon Shift (4:00PM-6:00PM). We cannot solicit donations on the grounds of the Capitol nor during the march itself, but will ask folks for donations during the march. If you want to help us collect donations, then sign-up here!

If you won't be attending the Rally but would like to make a contribution, please do so here.

5. Security/Marshals (10:30AM-6:00PM). The security committee currently needs volunteers. We would like to have 150 people sign up to work on June 10th and currently have around 40 people. Thank you to those who have signed up!

This is a serious job and requires a commitment to attend one full training session, fill out a questionnaire, and work from 10:30 AM until the end of the march at 6:00PM on June 10th. If you are interested, please send an email to UFPJ's security coordinator, Steve Sher man. If you can't do it but know of others who might, please forward this on.

6. Legal Observers (2:00PM-6:00PM). The primary role of the Legal Observer is to be the eyes and ears of the legal team; to observe and record incidents and the activities of law enforcement in relation to the demonstrators. This includes documenting, for example, any arrest, use of force, intimidating display of force, denial of access to public spaces like parks and sidewalks, and any other behavior on the part of law enforcement that appears to restrict demonstrators' ability to express their political views.

We need Metro DC area volunteers so we can conduct trainings. If you live in or around the DC Metro area and would like to sign up to become a legal observer, please sign-up here.

7. General Volunteers (11:00AM-6:00PM). We are looking for volunteers to help with greeting guests at the Rally on Sunday, June 10, and handing out guides and schedules for the day's events at the Volunteer/Information booth. You will be helping people with the Rally Map, passing out the schedules, getting speakers to where they need to go, etc. If you would like to volunteer or have any questions, please send an email to office@endtheoccupation.org.

PEACE  IN THE  MIDDLE  EAST:

Passed 5/07/04 by The UMC,
PN 40992  www.gc2004.org    www.umns.umc.org/

"Jerusalem is sacred to all the children of AbrahamJews, Christians, Muslims.  The peaceful resolution of Jerusalem's status is crucial to the success of the whole process of making a just and lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

UMs seek for all people in the Holy Land an end to military occupation, freedom from violence, and full respect for the human rights of all under international law.

WHEREAS, targeted assassinations, suicide bombings, and attacks against  civilians both Israelis and Palestinians heighten the fear and suffering of all; and

WHEREAS, people in the US, through their taxes, provide several billions of dollars in economic and military assistance to the State of Israel each year, which allows for the building of bypass roads and settlements which are illegal

Therefore, be it resolved, that The UMC opposes continued military occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem, the confiscation of Palestinian land & water resources, the destruction of Palestinian homes, the continued building of illegal Jewish settlements, ...the Wall of Separation... and any vision ofa 'Greater Israel...'

Be it further resolved, that we urge the US government to end all military aid,...to initiate an arms embargo on the entire Mideast region, and to redistribute the large amount of aid now given to Israel and Egypt to support economic development efforts of nongovernmental organizations throughout the region, including religious institutions, human rights groups, labor unions, and professional groups within Palestinian communities

We urge all UMs to support, and participate in, the work of international peace and human rights organizations to use nonviolent acts of disobedience to provide protection for Palestinians and Israelis seeking nonviolently to end the occupation."

"Jerusalem is sacred to all the children of Abraham: Jews, Christians, and Muslims.  We have a vision of a shared Jerusalem as a city of peace and reconciliation, where indigenous Palestinians and Israelis can live as neighbors and, along with visitors and tourists, have access to holy sites and exercise freedom of religious expression. " (GC 2004 Res 40992)

"UMs are committed to the objective of a comprehensive Arab-Israeli peace agreement that would bring recognition and security to Israel and national and human rights to the Palestinians." (2002 Book Res p.757)  UMs are committed "for the end of Israeli colonialist occupation in the occupied Palestinian Territories and the achievement of the right to self-determination by the Palestinians."  [Free Election 1/25/06]

"The USA will be more than willing to help build the institutions necessary for a free society to emerge so that the Palestinians can have an independent, democratic Palestine that is at peace with Israel." (said Pres W Bush 11/10/04).

"The UMC renews its commitment for peace, rooted in our deepest traditions of justice & compassion, and reaffirms the UN's call for the withdrawal of Israelis from the West Bank & Gaza."  (GC 2004)

Road Map to War:  "Instead of telling Israel that it's okay to violate international law and UN resolutions, Pres Bush should be pressuring both sides to stem the violence and start talking again. This Israeli plan to retain large Jewish settlements on the W Bank has betrayed years of diplomatic advances and is a Road Map to war," said Rev Jim Winkler, Gen Sec of the UMC GB C&S,  CMEP.

 Our Wall and Our $ettlements

*21 Jewish settlements in Gaza and 4 in W Bank (8,000 settlers) were dismantled since September 2005.
*About 10% Palestinian homes & 180,000 olive trees were demolished in Gaza alone.
*58 water wells were confiscated for illegal use by Jewish settlements -- funded by Americans.
*Over 50,000 Palestinians became homeless due to bulldozed homes by D-9 CATs paid with US taxes.
*3 times as long and 3 times as high as the Berlin Wall was, Israel's wall final construction cost is estimated tobe $2 billion of military aid from US
*In south Gaza the 300m wide Palestinian-free buffer zone has an 8m high metal wall given to Egypt.
*Our wall&fence is over 350 mi long, and Israel continues to move forward on its plan to encircle Palestine.
*Our winding wall is built inside the Green Line -- reaching 10 mi into Palestine in places.
*The security-wall separate Palestinians from their most fertile land, water resources, access to schools, health care, jobs, agricultural markets, and relatives... It protects Israel sometimes.
* The occupied area is not controlled by the democratically elected, sovereign legislature & president of Palestine.
* Israel & Palestine do not recognize each other. Israel is "pushing Palestinians into the Dead Sea." Employees may stay.

UMC RESOLUTIONS
War, Peace, and Militarism

passed 5/5/04 by The UMC,
PN 40153
www.umc.org/gc2004

"UMs believe war is incompatible with the teachings and examples of Christ, and deplore war and urge the peaceful settlement of all disputes among nations.  From the beginning, the Christian conscience has struggled with the harsh realities of violence & war, for these evils clearly frustrate God's loving purposes for humankind.
We yearn for the day when there will be no more war and people will live together in peace and justice. So we believe that war, and other acts of violence, are never acceptable to Christians...
We affirm the principles of a Just War Theory... We urge the establishment of the rule of law in international affairs as a means of the elimination of war...
We therefore reject war as a usual instrument of national foreign policy...
and that the militarization of society must be challenged & stopped."

UMC  COMMENTARIES

DECIDE AND STAND
by Rev Kimball Boyd Coburn
Jesus said, "I did not come to bring peace but a sword," which meant he called his disciples to make a decision [to follow him or not]...
I pray every day for the end of the war in Afghanistan and Iraq.  War never makes sense to God.  However, it made sense to a lot of us Americans after the tragedy of 9/11 and the belief that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.  Deep down, people of faith know that war is never the answer.  War creates more animosity and possibilities of war. But it seems like we will never learn... We become fearful and fall back on the power of weapons instead of the power of love. We fear losing our freedom, our security, and our material lifestyle.  I wrote the song "Only Love Remains" as the war broke out:
"When the senseless words have lost their meaning;
And the senseless wars have lost redeeming; Only love remains."
I can understand why some people are divided by the war.  What I can't understand is why Christians are divided. It is almost as if we worship different Gods or read different Bibles. Jesus' life and teachings were such an example for love, understanding and reconciliation. It is hard to see how his life and his lessons can be so misconstrued to support the violence of war.
I have friends who support our president's reasoning and rationale for continuing the war, and they will continue to be my friends... But, we are God's instruments on earth, and we must decide and make the commitment to work for peace.
Christ calls us to decide for peace.  For many people it is un-American to stand against our political leaders, and so it causes division.  Jesus said it would be this way -- but the call is clear and the way of righteousness beckons. We are to decide and stand for peace, study war no more, and work toward a kingdom that includes all peoples.
Peace and Agape

Wounds of My People
by Rev Thomas Hill, III,  PS District Superintendent
They have treated the wound of my people carelessly, saying, "Peace, peace" when there is no peace. Jeremiah 6:14
Jeremiah's writings to the people of Israel was at a time when Israel had been invaded by the Babylonians and Jerusalem had been destroyed.  Israel had forgotten their God and was not living in justice and righteousness.  God's anger with them would end, and a new, faithful nation would be raised up from those who survived Israel's destruction.
Just as the people of Israel in Jeremiah's time shared in the corruption of Israel's rulers, so too, do we today, share in this injustice in Iraq.  The death toll among the Iraqi people are well over 100,000, and over 2,000 US troops have been killed -- several thousand are injured.  The 9/11 terrorist attack on American soil, no matter how horrific, cannot  justify the wanton slaughter of innocent people.  We invaded Iraq without justification to calm fears generated by our government.  It will not make us safe.  If we do not work for peace, in every way imaginable, we too will be treating carelessly the wound that has been opened upon the people who are the victims of this war.  Let us not simply be persons who give lip service to the words, "peace, peace."  Let us work for peace!

Concerns Regarding the War
by the Cal-Pac PWJ Coordinator, Joyce Georgieff
We join with the increasing opposition from within the government, military, religious and private sectors on the war in Iraq.  Are we elevating war as our main instrument of national foreign policy?  Meanwhile under the radar screen reckless policies fire up a new and terrifying arms race, degrade the environment; erode civil rights and respect of the international community.  An increasingly permanent military economy will continue to prioritize budgets away from social needs.  Speak Up!

Peace on Earth is Doing God's Work
by the Cal-Pac PWJ Educator, JoAnn Fukumoto
There is no doubt God wanted us to be peacemakers.  But he knew how hard it is to make peace in the world.  There are  strong, deeply entrenched forces opposing peacemaking such as hatred, greed, power and fear.  History shows that these forces have always led to wars and more wars.  We all know that in our families where  there is no love  there is no peace.  This is true in every area of human experience and life.  If you love your neighbor, you also love Allah/God.
PWJ Covenant Congregations' vision is to move the church into community action that addresses the systems, policies, and structures that tie our hands and prevent the church  from doing God's ministry in the world.

From  Occupied  Palestine
by Rev Sandra Olewine, United Methodist Liaison - Jerusalem
solewine@annadwa.org

One of the questions which occupied many people in the USA following the horrific attacks on 9-11 was "Why do they hate us so?"  While a lot has been said about that particular question, one thing is clear, the policies of the US are perceived by many people outside of the America as inconsistent.

Following Pres Bush's speech at the UN, many applauded his call for the UN to take a stand, to become a body that sets procedures to see that the will and law of the international community is carried out.  But,  outside the US the call rang hollow.
Many in the Middle East are not opposed to investigating or dismantling weapons of mass destruction.  But, Iraq is not the only nation in violation of UN resolutions. Others too like Israel & Iran have disregarded or ignored the will of the international community.  Will there be a simultaneous procedure set that those countries also "come into line"?

As  Israeli settlements (colonies) continue to grow, as Israeli bypass roads continue to be built in Palestine, as separation walls, trenches, and barbed-wire fences are constructed, the possibility of a 2-state solution for a just peace becomes improbable.  Under these conditions, the Palestinians will not be the ones responsible for destroying the "Jewish State".

There will be no way left to create viable borders between two sovereign and independent countries.  What will be is an apartheid state which sends the Palestinian population home to their [fenced in] prisons each day -- a reality that will mean that the population between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea will be 55% Jewish and 45% Palestinian (Muslim and Christian).  Some may call the numerous prisons "the State of Palestine", but such would only be an illusion. And illusions won't go a long way towards bringing security, justice or peace to Palestinians or Israelis.

Within such a reality, a one bi-national state solution seems to be the only hope for a just and durable peace. Certainly this would require some major shifts in people's thinking -- having to live together in a democratic state that truly grants equal rights to all of its citizens regardless of ethnic or religious identities.  The demographics in this small piece of land will be the same whether an apartheid state, 2 sovereign nations, or a bi-national state exist here.  If Israel remains committed to these colonialist policies, then the best hope for justice will be one state for all [called Palisrael].

"Be Not Afraid"
by Congo Missionaries, David & Lori Persons
These are comforting words for the world we live in.  Fear has escalated to levels that have not been seen in a  long time.  Fear of terrorist, other ethnic groups, other religious groups, etc. have become part of the fabric of our lives.  Our country, Congo is still in crisis from wars, economic instability, a tremendous death toll and the horrible effects this has on all of the population.  Many youth under different power hungry leaders have taken to banding together and are called the Mayi-Mayi.  As a law unto themselves, they have killed, stolen and brutalized whole populations... Some pastors made a daring stand for peace and reconciliation with these groups... Several thousand Mayi-Mayi laid down their arms and made decisions to turn their lives around and chose peace rather than fear in their lives!  Let us be grateful in this season for the birth of the Prince of Peace who calms our every fear, and may we also be daily examples of His Peace to those around us.

Prince of Peace
by Japan Missionaries, Claudia & Toshi Yamamoto
During this time of year we think about the Prince of Peace...the peace that Christ brings to our lives.
We are standing at the crossroads of two choices, whether we choose life and create a culture of peace and reconciliation, or we choose the road of destruction and spread a culture  of violence and war.
Before we chose the war in Iraq, Japan was questioning the war.  Now we are continuing our efforts to work for peace and justice and seek ways to uphold Japan's Peace Constitution, especially in light of the nationalism and increasing militarism of today.
There is a push in the Diet for an emergency law to go through which would make it possible for the Japanese to go to war again and those who disagree to be punished.  This is clearly against Japan's Peace Constitution.  We oppose killing and the War in Iraq.  It is the children who suffer most, and that is why we must work for shalom, for peace, in our world today. (Jeremiah 31:15)
May the peace of Christ "Kirisuto no heiwa" prevail in our hearts and throughout the whole wide earth.  Let us continue to find peaceful ways to rid the world of war and violence and work for peace.

UMC Statement on War With Iraq:  www.umc-gbcs.org/gbpr171.htm  Jan3'03
Bishops' Statement on War With Iraq:  www.umc.org/headlines/washington/default.htm

Statement
onthe Start of War

War, said John Wesley, is a "monster" that cannot be reconciled to "any degree of reason or common sense" -- a  monster bringing miseries to the warriors and to all those in the warriors' path.  Wesley also said that war is too often caused by national leaders, who in disregard of their people, fail to find more creative ways of settling disagreements.

Our Nation is Engaged in an Illegal War

by Rev Thomas Hill, III, Dist Super
"Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth!  For I am God, and there is no other."
I offer the above words of the prophet Isaiah for you reflection and prayer.
Short of a miracle, our nation is engaged in an illegal war with Iraq.  Yes, Illegal.  A declaration of war can only come from our Congress, and they have not committed this nation to war.  One man, the President, has determined that we should be engaged in war.  God help his soul!
But God help all of us.  We have preferred our way to God's way.  We have sought to be safe, rather than to live in peace.  We have treated some  with equity; others with contempt.  We say we are a just people, but we practice injustice.  We believe God is on our side, but God  takes no side
What good are we when we cannot even agree to live in peace?
We have chosen death over life.
O Lord, forgive us.  We do not know what we are doing to you.

TV ad by UMC Bishop Talbert
An attack on Iraq violates God's law. No nation under God has that right to violate international law. It violates God's law and the teachings of Jesus Christ, the prince of peace.  Iraq hasn't wronged us. War will only create more terrorists. I don't see that small nation as being the kind of threat to our nation that the media portrays. War will result in the suffering of masses of children, among others. And what will happen to the rest of the Arab world? Waging war will remove the influence of the more moderate element and put the future in the hands of the more radical elements...

A Defining Moment in History

by Bishop Mary Ann Swenson, Cal-Pac Conference, The UMC

My heart is heavy as I write to you.  We are at a defining moment in history, a moment which will forever change the lives of our children, the children of Iraq, and children around the world.  As our government prepares to escalate military action against Iraq, it is imperative that we give voice to how war will affect all of God's children.

Bishops have been invited to Washington DC to join ecumenical witness to head-off an invasion of Iraq.  General Board of Church and Society leader, Jim Winkler, expresses [12/7/02] his concerns, "...a pre-emptive war represents a major and dangerous change in United States foreign policy. It also sets a terrible precedent for other nations."  Few nations have been convinced of the need for military action.  Most, strongly resist this.  How much more suffering will the children of Iraq, its neighbors, and the world endure if a pre-emptive military invasion and occupation continues?

We follow the Christ who calls us to be active peacemakers.  We follow One who tells us, "Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called Children of God."  We must trust God for our security, not in the force of our own might.  And as your Bishop, I join the Task Force on Children and Poverty urging all United Methodists in the Cal-Pac Annual Conference to do three things:

1. Pray for the leaders and the people of Iraq.
2. Distribute the statements of the GBCS General Secretary; the Women's Division; and the LA Times opinion article co-authored by Rev Jim Lawson.
3. Call, email, or fax the President to tell him to aggressively pursue diplomatic and multilateral solutions to Iraq  instead of military actions.

The human and social casualties of war are great.  The spiritual casualties are immense.  We as people who claim the faith of Christ must incarnate his faithfulness in the present.  Our children look to us for faithfulness.  May we remember who we are, all of us, as children of the living and loving God.
Shalom-Salaam,

The criminal attack of 9/11 was the most painful event ever experienced in the modern history of our nation.  However, with all the pain and grief, it brought out the best of America by showing our true strength.  We will never forget the victims, nor will we diminish our resolve to work in full partnership to protect our country together with all who cherish and appreciate freedom, decency and the value of human life.

Preventing future crimes of similar magnitude is the responsibility, not only of the government and law enforcement, but  of  each citizen.  As we protect our country against such outrage, we should understand that the soul of America is what has made us the inspiration, sometimes the envy or even the target of different groups in the world. This is due to our liberties, the dignity, and the civil rights granted to all Americans by the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights.  It is our duty as patriotic citizens to uphold the civil rights of all and to maintain the noble principle of peace.  God bless America.

AN  AMERICAN  MUSLIM  PRAYER  OF  REMEMBRANCE

Dear God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.  As our country remembers the heartbreaking events of 9/11, we humbly turn to You in prayer.  At a time when our nation is facing unprecedented challenges, we need Your Spirit, mercy, and strength, now more than ever, to guide us down the right path.

Dear Lord,  we pray that you have taken under Your merciful wings those who innocently perished on that tragic day.  We are grateful they were once a part of our lives.  We thank You for the love and joy they gave their parents, spouses, children, friends, and co-workers.  We thank You for the testimony of their faith in their churches, mosques, synagogues, and temples.  We thank you for the comfort and courage they extended to others.  O God,  with Your compassion, please answer our prayer.

Almighty Allah,  we have seen the very worst that we are capable of -- vengeance, greed, and murder.  But, we have seen the very best that we are capable of  -- courage, compassion, service, faith, heroism, community, love.  Strengthen us and make us better people who will choose a better way. It is in You that we place our ultimate trust; it is to You that we pray; it is to You that we ask for forgiveness and guidance.
God bless the victims, please bless the families, please bless America.
Amen
