Mission Team News -- July 2009

The Mission Team has returned from a week of repairing houses in the Upshur County area, near Buckhannon, WV. Sixteen adults and youth from Pea Ridge UMC made the trip this year. While there, the Team worked on three houses.

  • The first was for an elderly lady. At her house, the Team fixed a front door, installed a deadbolt, painted a porch roof, built a handrail, installed a storm window, and set pavers for a sidewalk.
  • The next was for the lady's son, who lives nearby with his wife and son. The Team installed siding on a gable, installed underpinning, built a railing on the front porch, and installed soffit.
  • The third house was one worked on last summer for a woman and her two sons. When her new roof was installed over the course of the last year, several holes had been made in the ceiling of her living room. To fix the damage without creating too much dust for one of the son's breathing problems, the Team installed a new plank ceiling.

Several of the tasks for this year's trip were ones that the Team could see to completion. It gives a good feeling to be able to finish something and see how it turns out. Those tasks we didn't finish -- we feel we got a good start and have made it easier for the next team to step in.

In addition, we took with us some donations from Members of the Church to give to the Upshur Parish House Food and Clothing Pantry. The Vacation Bible School children raised $81 and collected three boxes of food, and Gerry Simmons and Carol Hayes worked throughout the past year to make 16 fabulous baby blankets and quilts. These items were truly appreciated by the Parish House staff.

Our Mission Team worked hard, met some wonderful people, had some great fellowship, and learned so much. Plans are already underway for next year's trip. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve in this way and for the enormous support we receive from our fellow Church Members.
