History
The Thimble Club began on October 9, 1914 by a group of civic-minded women in the village of Gaines , who wished to work together for the promotion of community welfare. Each village in the area had its own club. Marshlands and Watrous had Capsule Club and a Secret Pal Club, and Galeton and Ansonia were traveling distances away. Remember, the ladies walked to the community functions in 1914 and the villages were more populated than today. Presently Thimble Club members are ladies in the area that include Elk Township, Hector Township, Shippen Township, Gaines Township, Galeton Boro and the Germania area.
Past projects have been funding for sidewalks and street lights and donations to the church. Social Service projects include provision of eye glasses, clothing, food and fuel for derserving families. Today, this club still does these projects plus they now have an outreach building stocked with clothing, household supplies, and personal hygiene articles ready to be given in times of need to victims of flood, fires, or just tough times.
When a loved one passes away in the community these ladies put on a dinner for the family and friends of the deceased. They visit nursing homes, host parties for the handicapped and pack food baskets for shut-ins.
Material is being solicited. Please contact Webservant with subject material.
