September 30, 2006- Hi there. It has been a few weeks since I have given out any specific information so here is another update. Lisa is doing well in school. She is still keeping up with her classes. Reading is still the slower class but she is doing well with some adjustments (getting extra time to read and do the tests). So far she has read two books and working on the third. She got an 80% and 100% on the test for the two books that she has read so far. She got progress reports at the middle of the marking period and she is getting A’s and B’s in all her classes so far. (Praise God). She is keeping up with her homework and studying for tests. Dave or I help her with these, but she is doing most of it herself. She is doing extra activities outside of school. She started doing the community choir that she was involved in before the accident, she has signed up for girl scouts, and she is busy with church activities. We didn't want to have her do too much so she could spend extra time on school things also. She will see the neurosurgeon in Geisinger in two weeks. He wanted to see how she is doing and check on the healing of her head incision. She will also need to go to Philly shortly after that to get things set up for another eyelid surgery in November. Lisa doesn't mind these appointments except that she misses school. We have set up physical therapy and speech after school to give her more therapy than what she gets in school. She still gets physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy in school. They are in the homeroom time or a study hall time so she isn't missing classes. I am amazed each day at the progress Lisa is making. I know her reading, word recognition, and vocabulary have improved since returning home from Philly. She is working hard to do well in school and your prayers are being answered. September 9, 2006- The kids have been in school for a couple of weeks (minus the holiday). Lisa seems to be doing well for the most part. We had a meeting with the teachers and administration during the first week and decided to "wait and see" how she does and if anything needs to be changed. She is doing well taking notes in class. There is an aide in the class who takes notes and then gives Lisa a copy of those notes to compare at home with her own notes. So far she is getting all the main ideas--only didn't write down a few minor things. She is struggling a bit with reading. It seems it is not because of comprehension, but because it takes her longer to read. So we are making some adjustments for that; we will see if that it enough or if more things will need to be done. Lisa seems to be getting around the school--halls, rooms, café, well. She walks a short distance to meet her Dad after school at his car. She was scheduled for some testing this week. We haven't heard anything official about the results. We wanted to test her reading level. She needs to read certain amount of books for reading class. So far she is still interested in Nancy Drew Books. September 2, 2006- Well the week of school finally came. Lisa started 8th grade. We had a meeting with her teachers and I feel good about her classes and the school year. She is in all the regular classes except history. The teachers are all willing to help her in any way she needs. We aren't sure how much extra help she will need or if she will need extra help. There is an aid in the classes who takes notes which she gives Lisa a copy to see if she misses any notes and so far she hasn't. She sees many of her friends she didn't see in class last year which she is glad about. She joined the church membership this past Sunday. She has attended a several week class to get ready for this step in the church. She was pleased to be finished with the classes and to get this membership from the church. She is working to do homework and extra reading at home. I still see so much positive attitude that it gives me strength to work harder to get Lisa back up to "her level". |
