Thrift Shop Talk to Tillie for input..... Originally proposed thirty-five years ago by June Eid, then the pastor's wife; it has evolved as mission outreach to Pawling and the surrounding towns. Due to limited space at the Pawling Resouce Center, donations of clothing and household items are no longer accepted there. Those in need of goods other than the specialized services of the Resource Center are referred to the PUMC Thrift Shop. The Thrift Shop provides help to battered women and their children who often arrive at the Grace Smith House with only the clothes they are wearing, to women sent by the job training programs to find outfits suitable for the workplace, and to folks whom fire has taken clothes and their other possessions. The Neighborhood Center of Utica, NY and Camden, NJ, part of the NYAC mission effort are also helped by the Thrift Shop. Those in need receive items gratis with compassion and dignity. Other folks come to stretch their budgets or to simply find a bargain. The nominal fees collected are used for the mission projects of the NYAC at home and overseas. The range of items available continues to grow, limited only by space. In addition to a full range of clothing for all sizes and seasons, there is a wide range of household items: furniture, dishes, glassware, cooking and eating utensils, pots, small appliances, linens, slip covers, curtains, rugs, lamps, wall hangings and bric-a-brac of every type. A favorite item is jewelry. The shop is technically open Thursday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Wednesday evenings 7-9 p.m. A special feature that wins praise from clients is the Wish list. By leaving one's telephone number and desired item , a phone call will let one know when the wish comes in. Return to previous Page |
