A
Historical Look at Concord
It is uncertain when Concord Methodist Episcopal Church, South, actually originated, as available records state that it had its beginning in a school house near the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mack H. Clark, and that later, services were held in Hunter
School.
In 1894, Mr. and Mrs. Clark deeded land to C. H. Leach, Tobe Shelton, and J. W. Winbish as trustees for the purpose of building a church. A small frame building was erected and served as a place of worship until 1952.
In 1948 under Reverend W. E. Barber’s leading, a building fund was started. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur N. Shockley donated .3 acre of land to enlarge the grounds and construction began.
In 1952 the building was completed to the extent that the basement could be used for services.
In 1953, the sanctuary was completed and the pulpit furniture and furnace were installed; pews were placed in 1954. There was no necessity for indebtedness because of the generosity of members and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Ayers donated all of the rough lumber used in construction; the men of the community gave freely of their time and labor and many friends of the church as well as members made generous donations.
The church was dedicated on May 29, 1955 while Reverend J. P. Pullen was pastor.
As the years progressed, the congregation realized the need of more extensive facilities; so in 1975, a well, kitchen and restrooms were added. In 1983 the ceiling in the sanctuary was completely renovated and the interior painted.
In 1985, a brick-encased bulletin board, a gift from Stuart United Methodist Church was erected on the grounds. The old, very small vestibule was razed and a new 10 x 20 foot was built, along with a ramp for the handicapped, a porch, new steps and a steeple were added.
Old church records state “This is a small church with small membership but a loving and loyal group of people who will stand by the preacher and meet all their obligations 100%. Any preacher is lucky to serve these people.”
Our church welcomes you to come and experience worship in a place built in love and dedicated to the glory of the Lord.
