Christmas Gathering - Appointment Service - Revival 2000 - Vacation Bible School

little star The "stars" were out in force on Saturday, December 23 for the Parkway Church School Holiday Pageant! This was a big event for the Church School and the adults who produced and appeared in it. Fellowship Hall was packed, and we were treated to a huge, well rehearsed cast (as you will see) presenting the familiar Christmas story with music, dancing and narration. In addition to the Christmas component, this inclusive production covered the celebrations of Chanukah and Kwanzaa as well. We were treated to angels and shepherds, stately processions of Kings and spirited stomps, Liturgical Dance and instrumental and choral music. I'll let the pictues tell the story of this impressive effort:
narrator Sandy Littlejohn The story was developed through music and a narrator; here is Sandy Littlejohn singing "We've Come So Far" and narrator Old Joseph, portrayed by Ben Aryee.
There were "crowd scenes"!

And yes, there were angels and shepherds, leading to the joyous Nativity tableau in Bethlehem.

Channukah stomp The Celebrations of Chanukah's Miracle of Oil and Rededication of the Temple, and Kwanzaa's Gathering of First Fruits were described through poetry and dance.
Elements of Liturgical dance, and a first rate orchestra added richness to the whole experience.

As I mentioned, the audience turn out was gratifying, and older and younger seemed to be equally captivated.

The final bow gave the "backstage" volunteers and the cast a chance to be seen all together:

flute demonstration It was the sort of warm event no one is in a hurry to leave. Parents congratulated their cast members and introduced themselves to other parents and grandparents. The "orchestra" drew a good bit of interest too, and one informal flute lesson was observed! Thanks to Jackie Nolan, Kinisha Nixon and Vickie Williams-Barrows for the enormous amount of time and energy they lavished on this Pageant. Hope they have caught their breath by the time next year's rehearsals begin!

creche Parkway's Fellowship Hall was a warm and festive place to be on the evening of December 2 for the Christmas Gathering. The weather hadn't been great, but that didn't stop the hardy folk ready to begin getting into a Christmas spirit. Harold Goring set up his one-man-band keyboard and proceeded to entertain us all for the evening with Christmas music and hymns. Goodies were plentiful, and everyone (everyone!) seemed to have a wonderful time.

Rev. Brima preaching On Sunday, November 26 at 3:00 on an autumn afternoon, Parkway was proud to officially welcome Rev. Anthony Brima as Pastor at a very special Celebration of an Appointment service. It was a wonderful, warm occasion, well attended by members of the Parkway community, visitors from Rev. Brima's previous appointment, Town Officials, liturgical dancers visiting from Greenwood UMC and the Universal Church of God in Christ, and as a special treat our District Superintendant the Rev. Dr. Jerome King Del Pino and his wife!
Dr. Del Pino presented a powerful message of welcome, and Rev. Brima followed with warm words of his own.

Vacation Bible School 2000 was a wonderful, busy, happy time of learning for 50 kids who participated, and the 20 dedicated youth and adults who taught, cooked and facilitated. On Sunday, August 27th we were treated to some rousing singing (including a lovely antiphonal choral introit!) and a great summation of the five main lessons learned that week. I'll present some photos from morning worship, but will let the words from that presentation speak for the week.
Reading for Worship Sunday, August 27, 2000

Our Vacation Bible School theme this year was "Club Can-Do: Kids Called to Care".
We learned how children from the Old and New Testaments fulfilled God's plan in Bible times.
Just as God worked through those children, God works through today's Can-Do Kids to make a difference in the world.
During the week we looked at Bible stories that showed us how to welcome, be strong, show love, trust God, and Reach out to others.
The first was a story of a Can-Do Kid named Samuel, who was a helper to the high priest, Eli.
Samuel heard the voice of God, but God's words were hard words to hear. Samuel was a Can-Do Kid who had to be strong and deliver God's message to his adult friend, Eli.
Sometimes when God speaks to us, we don't always listen.
Yes, I think that was the heart of the lesson, but God wants us to respond too.
How do we know if it is God speaking?
Sometimes God's call may not be a voice that you hear. You may see someone in need and help that person; and others may teach us about persons in need. No matter what the need may be, Can-Do Kids are called to care about those needs.
Another Bible Can-Do Kid we met was a young girl named Miriam, and yet - her baby brother Moses was the one who got the fame, but Miriam's love made sure that we'd remember Moses' name.
If it hadn't been for Miriam showing love for her baby brother and helping to protect him, the story of Moses - a very long story in the Bible, would have been a short story - a very short story.
Miriam was really a Bible Can-Do Kid. Her acts proved that she did love Moses, and she would have done anything to see that he was cared for.
Our next Can-Do Bible Kid was David. What a Goliath of a problem he faced!
Long before he was a Can-Do King, David was a Can-Do Kid who trusted God - even in a really scary situation.
Goliath was a giant who was nasty, rude, and mean. None of the adults were interested in taking on this bully named Goliath, but Can-Do David brought him down with nothing more than a shepherd's sling and one smooth stone. David trusted God and stood up to this Philistine.
So, David the shepherd boy, brave as could be, was another Bible Can-Do Kid who said, "Lord, use me." David put all of his trust in God that day; and Goliath, the giant, just went away.
Then, there was a predicament another Bible Can-Do Kid found himself in one spring day. It took a miracle to overcome that predicament.
Miracles do happen. There's a story of a Can-Do Kid who helped Jesus feed five thousand people. Jesus didn't worry about plates or forks or dishes, he fed them with loaves of bread and two little fishes. Miracles like this one happen every day, especially when God shows us the way. When we think what we have to share is so very small, God multiplies these gifts as we respond to God's call.
This story is a great example of no matter how small our gift or talents, we can make a difference.
That is so true, By serving, caring, showing love for one another, trusting God and reaching out, we all can start to see miracles happening in our lives as well as in the lives of others.
Now Can-Doing is not to stop here! So keep on Can-Doing the rest of the year!
Jesus calls us all to be Can-Do Kids.
Always remember there is so much you can do. When you're giving to others, it's a blessing to you!
