In the United Methodist Church, Parish Nursing is under the umbrella of Health & Welfare, General Board of Global Ministries. Patricia Magyar RN, MPH is the Executive Secretary for the General Board. Sharon Hinton, RN, MSN is the Parish Nurse Consultant for the denomination.
Current Projects
Current projects at the denomination level include:
- Seeking out current UMC Parish Nurses and congregations with Parish Nurse Ministries.
- Getting the word spread about the new UMC Parish Nurse Listserve. (Join on our Mailing List page)
- Planning our first parish nurse tract at the UMC Empowering Ministries of Health Conference (see calendar and links) Send Sharon an e-mail for more information and a brochure.
- Providing a Parish Nurse Booth at General Conference, 2008
- Development of new informational materials available from General Board of Global Ministries
- Development of Jurisdictional and Conference Level Parish Nurse Representatives to form a support network
Sharon T. Hinton
Sharon T. Hinton (RN, MSN) has more than 20 years experience in nursing. She is the Executive Director and lead instructor for Rural Nurse Resource. Sharon trained as a parish nurse in 1999, and is the parish nurse for this ministry. She is also the Parish Nurse Consultant for the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, and the Northwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church Golden Cross/Parish Nurse Coordinator.
Sharon is a certified parish nurse educator through the International Parish Nurse Resource Center, has a Masters Certificate in Pastoral Studies from St Joseph's College of Maine and graduated in May, 2008 with her MSN in parish nursing. She is a published writer and speaks nationally on a wide variety of subjects.
Sharon lives on the family farm in with her husband James, her children Katie and Matthew, and a very spoiled menagerie of dogs, cats, and cows.
