Historical records indicate that the Methodist religion came to Palmyra through the efforts of the early circuit riders. At the beginning, groups of settlers held meetings in homes, barns and groves with the result that in 1811 the first regular Methodist Episcopal Church Class was formed. By 1822 the first regular Methodist Episcopal Church building was located on the corner of Johnson and Vienna Streets. The building was later moved farther "uptown" to Cuyler Street, enlarged, repaired and redecorated. In 1866 despite hard times and the country being involved in the Civil War, larger quarters were again needed and the land at the corner of Main and Church streets was purchased. Here the present building of brick and stone, designed by Elton St. John was erected. The exterior of the building has not undergone many changes to this day except for the addition of the new narthex in 1969. Many changes have occurred on the inside however, including the renovation of the Sunday School wing, the hand excavation under the Sunday school wing for a kitchen and dining hall and most recently the renovation of the inside of the narthex itself.
