Things you ought to know about the ministries and programs of Otterbein UMC
WEEK OF NOVEMBER 15TH, 2009

Due to the H1N1 Flu virus, Otterbein is asking you to please refrain from handshaking and to regularly use anti-bacterial hand soap.

Report from Mozambique   is a program that will be presented by Sue and Rachel Watts for the Missions Open Session TODAY at 9:30 a.m. in the auditorium.  You will see slides and hear all about the hospital, the orphans and the widows. Everyone is invited.

Please be advised: The Fidelity Sunday School Class will meet this Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. at The Western Sizzlin restaurant.

Basketball League – Otterbein’s first game of the season is this Tuesday! Game time is 6:30 p.m. As before, all games are played at the St. James Brethren church facility. Go Otterbein!

Mission Central Trip –Join us this Wednesday, bring a bag lunch and meet at the church parking lot at 7:30 a.m.  We’ll carpool to Mechanicsburg, PA and return about 4:00 p.m.  Our assignment may depend on how many participate, so call Debby Handley at (240) 420-8157 right away to sign up!

Popcorn Volunteers Still Needed for December! – Enjoy City Center Holiday Showcase while you hand out bags of fresh popcorn! Sign up to help with a 2 hour shift, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., 1-3 p.m., or 3-5 p.m. on December 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th. Check “box” in OtterKnows or call (301) 739-9386 to secure your spot. (More to come about this December opportunity!)

Wednesday Windows! We are looking forward to hearing a great story this Wednesday in room 202, at 12:00 p.m. Please bring a sandwich for lunch; drinks and dessert will be provided. Hope you will join us.

Harvest Home Next Sunday will be our Harvest Home service. Hopefully you have chosen which food to bring to the altar. There are so many beautiful colors to chose from. As Thanksgiving nears we think of how we will share our blessings with others.

Bell Ringers needed.   Signup sheets for the annual Salvation Army Bell Ringing are in the refreshminutes area.  Please help with this much-needed and very rewarding mission.  Dates are Saturdays, November 28, December 12, and December 19.  Please contact Shari Williams at (304) 274-5974 with any questions.

Special Offering Sunday, November 29. This day is designed as United Methodist Student Day and the money collected helps United Methodist students obtain scholarships and loans for their college and education. Envelopes will be in the bulletin. Please give as generously as you can.

Taking the Fifth – All are welcome to a discussion and sharing session on the topic of The Shack on November 29. By now author William P. Young has been on the interview fast track, generating even more excitement about his unique imagery for God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Bring your cookies and coffee to Fellowship Hall at 9:30 a.m. and join the circle!

Get Them While You Can! Tickets to the Senior Christmas Banquet are now on sale!! Join us at Mountain Gate Family Restaurant in Waynesboro, PA on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 for an “all you can eat” buffet, door prizes, entertainment and fun – all for $8.00. See Catherine Andrews, Kim Smith or stop in the office and see Karen for a ticket.

Bonus Book Sale – Only 5 More Weeks! The KY VIM team is selling 2 for 1 Bonus Books in the lobby. They offer great savings on fine dining, fast food, movies, golf, dry cleaning and more. Each book is $30. They make great gifts, and will be on sale for the next several Sundays.

Advent Concert and Tea is fast approaching! Mark your calendars for December13. Look for sign-up sheets to donate crackers, cheeseballs, nuts, cookies, tea sandwiches, etc., for the 'Winter Wonderland' Advent Tea.

Our “Tree of Hope” is now in Bishops’ Hallway on behalf of the children of Tree of Hope Prison Ministry. These children have one or both parents incarcerated. Choose an ornament from the tree with a child’s name and sign your name and phone number on the sheet by the tree. Do not wrap gifts, just place ornament on your gift. Gifts are due back by Monday, November 30. Thank you for making these children’s Christmas special!

Cold Weather Shelter Lunches.   Thanks to the Youth, Missions Committee and the Golden Rule, Fidelity, Sterling Bell, Men's, Steeple People, Contemporary Seekers and   Crossroads classes for their help in providing the lunches for this past week.  This ministry does help those who must live on the streets during the day with no funds to purchase a meal.

Otter Knows Deadline  Submit articles for the OtterKnows by Wednesday morning to our secretary Karen! Please include a subject line with your email, as it is difficult to recognize some e-mail addresses. Please send all articles to the church’s new-email.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH AND SERVICE!

Friends of Reeders – Items for “gift bags” to residents at Christmas are needed! Place in collection bin outside Bishop’s Hall. Priority items are Kleenex, Puffs, and Scotts brand facial tissues and Gillette Good News Disposable Razors. Full list available in the November newsletter. Questions? Contact Janet Jones on (301) 790-0722 or Faye Fowler on (301) 739-7181.

Apostles Build-- $4,376.30 raised, $1,123.70 to go. Otterbein (the Apostle John) is on its way to raising the $5,500 needed for a Habitat for Humanity home being sponsored by 12 area churches (12 Apostles). You can help by submitting a donation. Checks should be made out to Otterbein with the notation "Apostles Build". Notice on the display that 3 more churches have joined the effort to build this house.

Sunday School Classes Collecting Food Items - Early Elementary through Senior High classes are collecting canned food for the Community Food Bank. Each Sunday, from now until the end of December, we are asking our children and youth to bring in canned food. The food will be kept in each of their rooms and at the end of December we will count how many items we have collected. The food will then be donated to the food bank. Thanks in advance for supporting our efforts in this project.

Otterbein will host its first “Care & Cookie Connection”
on Sunday, November 29th at 9:30 a.m. in the Youth Room. All college members are invited to join us for a light breakfast, conversation and to help package care boxes for all college and military members.

* To All Members * We need folks to donate homemade cookies, brownies, fudge, buckeyes and rice krispee treats. Please bag by the 1/2 dozen and drop off that morning in the Fellowship Hall kitchen. Don't bake? Purchase hot chocolate, tea or coffee singles, or shop in the vending machine aisle at Sam’s for microwave popcorn, snack bags of pretzels, candy bars, granola bars, cheese crackers, etc.

Please take the time to bake or purchase the items listed above; our college and military members would appreciate a care package from Otterbein during the holidays. Questions? Please email or call me. Thanks, Trina Johnson, (301) 733-6276

Thanks to all who donated candy for the Missions gift bags. We were able to fill 600 bags with just a small amount left that we can use for Spring Fling. All of us appreciate your help with this neighborhood ministry.

Cookies for College and Military- It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas? It's not too early to fill out your reservation form for you to receive a care package filled with homemade cookies and treats from your Otterbein family. What a better way to get through finals or that holiday stress! Please fill out the form below or email your address to the church, otterbein@myactv.net.
