Christian Education at Otterbeinby email at otterbeinumc@verizon.net or by phone at (304) 263-0342. Confirmation — For more information, follow the Confirmation link. Special Sunday School Studies — Periodically, special and/or short term studies on specific topics of interest are offered on Sunday mornings. These have ranged from "United Methodist Beliefs" and "Worship" to "Enriching Your Marriage" and "20 Hot Potatoes Christians Are Afraid To Touch." Most special studies last from 4-6 weeks to meet the needs of those with varied schedules and to offer a break for established classes. Weekday Bible Studies are offered throughout the year and have included "That The World May Know," "Prayer," and the Pastor's special studies during Lent. These are announced in the bulletin and newsletter. Disciple Bible Study — People interested in an in-depth study of the Bible may be interested in either Disciple I, II, III or IV, Christian Believer, or Jesus in the Gospels. Disciple, an intensive study of the Old and New Testament is for those who have a deep interest in learning more about the Bible and have a commitment to the extensive reading necessary for the course. Christian Believer is a study of the basic beliefs of the Christian church. Jesus in the Gospels focuses on the portraits of Jesus found in the four Gospels — Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Students considering a Disciple class do not need to have prior experience with any Bible study, but they must have a willingness to explore the scriptures in new ways and be ready for lively discussions. Christian Believer and Jesus in the Gospels are designed for Disciple graduates. These programs, more than any Sunday School class, help prepare individuals to be true disciples of Jesus and leaders in the church. Call the church office for more information at (304) 263-0342 Alpha — This course is a 12 week study designed to help anyone who is interested in finding out more about the Christian faith. The Alpha course is an effective model for those who are unchurched and for those who are seeking to grow spiritually. Each week students come together to watch a video, discuss, pray, and fellowship. The group eats dinner, divides into small groups, and has lots of fun. Alpha is an opportunity for people to explore the meaning of life and its relationship with the Christian faith. Christian Believer is a 30 week course that concentrates on the basic beliefs and doctrines of the Christian church. Designed for followers of Jesus (and graduates of the Disciple Bible Study program), the class deals with what the Church teaches, how those teachings make a difference in our lives, what it means to be a Christian and where we, as Christians, stand. It emphasizes the head as well as the heart, allowing space for questions, doubt and dissent. If you are interested, contact Pastor Ken. Invitation to the Old Testament is an 8 week program. It invites participants to learn afresh to the various narrators of stories from the Torah, the Law, the Prophets, and the Wisdom writings. Participants gain a broad perspective of how the Old Testament clarifies God's call in the Bible and encourages our response. Contagious Believer is an 8 week Bible study about impacting your world. It provides practical ways to share your faith story and how to help people to begin a personal relationship with Jesus. Making Marriage Work is a 6 week study. Each session will be 90 minutes in length. Participants will watch a video presentation each week, complete a study guide, and participate in group discussion. God at Your Wits Ends is an 8 week program. The author probes the corners of our mind to uncover the faulty thinking that lead to feelings of uncertainty about our faith. She then explains how God affirms and even welcomes our humanity in the midst of our brokenness as she guides us through tough questions and answers specifically designed to assist us in our journey. As she continually points us to the awesome power of God's majestic truth, she helps us reshape our thinking as we re-establish the foundations of our beliefs in a loving God.
