This page is here to help you as you pastor to a church member concerning a possible call to ordained ministry. Below you will find the initial steps you are required to do as you guide your member through the early steps toward candidacy and possible ordained ministry.

  After you have been contacted by a church member concerning ordained ministry get them a copy of The Christian as Minister. If you don't have a copy get one from your District Superintendent.
  Review The Christian as Minister with your church member, helping them to begin to discern and clarify their call to ministry.
  You must mail a etter to the District Superintendent verifying that your church member has contacted you and is meeting with you concerning a call to ordained ministry. Please remember the following:
     
The potential Candidate must have been a member of your in good standing of your congregation of The United Methodist Church for at least two years immediately preceding application, please provide the date when church membership began in your letter to the District Superintendent.
      The potential Candidate must have been involved in at least one year of congregational leadership. Please outline in your letter to the District Superintendent the type and quality of leadership.
  After your church member has contacted the District Superintendent themselves, completed the required background checks, applied for their Candidacy Guidebook, and been assigned a mentor they must schedule with you and your Staff/Parish Relatiions Chairperson a time to meet with the committee. Suggested questions to review with the candidate can be found in para. 310 of The 2004 Book of Discipline. Remember the following should happen:
      Encourage the Candidate to write a statement describing his/her call to ministry that S/PPRC members can read ahead of the scheduled meeting time.
      The S/PPRC shall interview the Candiate about his/her call to ministry (prepare statement) and Wesley's historic questions found in para 310.
      The S/PPRC shall vote by written ballot. A 2/3 majority is required for approval to the Charge Conference.
  Upon receiving a positive recommendation from the S/PPRC, the Candidate must also receive a 2/3 positive vote from the your congregation's Charge Conference. Please remember the following:
      At least two public announcements must be made before a Charge Conference can be held (para. 246.8 and para. 247.8).
      This meeting must be presided over by the District Superintendent or a presiding elder.
      The vote must be taken by written ballot.
      After approval, the candidate must obtain the appropriate signatures for section 2 of the form 104: Declaration of Candidacy for Ordained Ministry (you can get FORM104 here).
  Remind the Candidate that they need to mail a copy of the following to the dCOM Registrar and to the District Superintendent's Office (a copy of Form 104 should also be sent to the Administrative Assistant to the Board of Ordained Ministry).
      Form 104: Declaration of Candidacy for Ordained Ministry
      Written work prepared for S/PPRC
      All educational transcripts

The Conference Board of Ordained Ministry is charged with coordinating much of the formation and continuing formation of the spiritual leaders who are licensed, consecrated, commissioned, or ordained for the ministry within the Illinois Great Rivers Conference.
