The Sending Ministries at Orange UMC
Though every area at Orange UMC reaches out to our world in
the name of Christ, the ministries under the Sending Advocacy
have at their core the sharing of our love and blessings with
those outside of our congregation, and in doing so the strengthening
of our personal relationships with Christ. We look locally and
globally for opportunities, and in the last few years have been
most active in the following missions that can
be accessed by:
Foreign missions
Local missions
Foreign missions: Orange continues to participate in and support the following
overseas missions as part of our outreach to fellow Christians
and to those in need of Christ's redeeming love throughout the
world.
Malawi AIDS Orphans
Ann Waldo has spearheaded
this ministry which has collected and delivered shipments of
bookbags and medicines for children
in Malawi whose parents have been the victims of AIDS.
New Horizons Youth Ranch, Cristianopolis,
Brasil
New Horizons is located in rural Brasil
in the state of Goias, about one hour south of Goiania. It is
a 150 acre home
to former
street children and orphans from Brasil's favelas. The students
participate in the daily work of the ranch, helping maintain
roads and buildings, take care of the horses and chickens, and
go to school, learning English along with math, science, pyschology,
Bible, Portuguese, etc. They experience the love of a Christian
family, for many the first time they have had a stable home environment.
We have had a team visit the Ranch in 2002 and 2003, and plan
to continue supporting them with our presence and money. Our
role has been one of visitors in Christ, sharing love, teaching
in areas of our expertise, playing soccer, and learning ourselves
how best to help their program.
Panama
Through a mission project headed
by University UMC, Orange UMC members have visited Panama to
help with medical care and building
projects. We plan to continue to send interested members with
University UMC.
Liberia
Orange UMC continues to support
the work of Herbert and Mary Zigbuo, United Methodist Missionaries.
The Zigbous work at the
Ganta UMC Mission, helping with administration of medical care
and education/outreach programs. Working in a war-torn country,
they have left their home site many times, returning to pick
up the pieces and continue their work for Christ.
Paris, France
Pastor Remy Mompenge
works with immigrant communities and youth in the heart of Paris,
and visited Orange UMC in Summer 2003
to share the story of his work there.
Cape Town, South Africa
Arthur and
Mabel Trout brought there vision for a youth center located in
Cape Town to Orange UMC this past Summer, and after
visiting here decided to name the Center Orange Youth Center.
They continue to raise support as they start building for the
future.

Local Missions: Orange Prison Ministry
Through the leadership
of Marc and Terry Law, we share in worship each month at Orange
Correctional Center, and help in the financial
support of Chaplain Ken Barker, whose position at the Alamance-Orange
Prison Ministry depends on local church support.
IFC/ Project Homestart
We continue to support the local outreach of the Interfaith
Council to the homeless in our community. IFC celebrated their
40th year of service in Chapel Hill-Carrboro in 2003, still with
many challenges. Our congregation continues to participate in
crop walk, serving meals at the IFC shelter, and serving meals
and helping families in resettlement through the Project Homestart
program addressing the needs of homeless women and children.
Blood Drive
Francis Gravitt has continued
our ministry of conducting a blood drive each year at Orange.
Adopt-A-Highway
John Landreth is the
point person for our cleanup effort of a section of Homestead
Road, carried out several times each year.
