First UMC Boise at Camp Magruder Written by Lydia Mawson, Director of Youth Ministries (Spring Break 2000) On March 26, 2000, two adults, seven senior high youth, and one six year old rolled into Camp Magruder via church van after a two-day trip from Boise, Idaho. This is the third year that youth from Boise First UMC have made this trek over Spring Break. The first project they had to encounter was dinner! This year Idaho's Spring Break did not conincide with Oregon's Spring Break week; so there was no dining hall available. All the meals were prepared (somewhat) by the teens. During the day they worked on several projects around the camp. First, they leveled and re-rocked a handicap ramp to the boat docks. Using the camp tractor the group made many trips to fill the trailer with rock and then spread it on the path. This is Lydia's favorite job at Camp Magruder. (No, not loading and spreading rock but driving the tractor.) In the evenings the group gathered around the wood stove in Beutler Lodge or the campfire circle outside for evening programs planned by the youth. It was very quiet and dark that week; with most of the staff gone for a week off. It was a great time to explore camp and nature and at the same time grow closer to God. When the trail was completed, there were other jobs that needed to be done around camp: raking the lawn next to Carrier Lodge, installing new benches outside Sherlock Lodge and at the swim beach, and doing a little bit of trimming here and there. All came away with a great sense of accomplishment and a deeper desire to retuen again next year. God has truly blessed us with a beautiful camp! Youth: Minar Kalyango, Kay Yokom, Michael Murphy, Ashley Mawson, Emily Davis, Olivia MacFadden-Elliott, Damon Shaff, and Christian Mawson. Adults: Jeff Payton and Lydia Mawson |
