"Life can be difficult"

by Ben Williams

Pastor, Oologah United Methodist Church

The Oologah community is feeling the loss since the tragic passing away of Lisa Tally.  People in this community feel sincere sympathy for the family, and especially for these children who have lost their mom.  Life can be so difficult at times.

An emergency medical team was called to the youth classroom of the Methodist Church last Sunday morning.  When the class stood for prayer, 16-year-old Travis Crowson slumped over and began to tremble with an apparent seizure.  The problem has been diagnosed as heat exhaustion, and we are grateful it was not the onset of a more serious disease.  Travis' mom had flown out early Sunday for Philadelphia, where she is undergoing treatment for a tumor behind her eye.  She is expected to recover, hopefully without any lasting negative effect.  Life can be difficult at times.

My wife has been spending the days at a hospital in Joplin, where her mother is recovering from two serious surgeries just five days apart.  Mom seems to take three steps forward and then two steps back.  How do we handle life when life becomes difficult?

Proverbs 3:5 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart."  Philippians Four teaches us to take all our worries to God in prayer.

Exodus Seventeen paints the picture of Moses trusting in God during a difficult time.  It was a fierce military battle.  As long as Moses kept his hands raised toward God, the people of God prevailed.  When Moses' arms grew tired and fell, the army lost ground.  As he raised his hands again toward God, they began to win again.  If we keep seeking God's help when life's battles become fiercest, we will find the strength that comes from Him.

Jesus said, "In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).
