Our Work
The First United
Methodist Church of Oakwood is a mission-oriented and Holy Spirit-lead
congregation. We participate in overseas and local missions. Our overseas
mission support extends to Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, the Caribbean,
Mozambique, the Middle East, with Wycliffe Bible Translators from Texas to the
Solomon Islands, and in international evangelism with GO International. In
the United States we support missionary efforts with Campus Crusade for Christ
in Georgia and with Kentucky Cornerstone Mission in Beattyville, Kentucky.
We also sent "Flood Buckets" and several mission teams to help with relief after
Hurricane Katrina.
Our local missions include assisting
with Gainesville Action Ministries (GAM), serving meals at Good News at Noon,
and helping needy families through the South Hall Community Food Pantry
(SHCFP) which is located on our property and which we operate
ecumenically in conjunction with St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church, Christ Lutheran
Church, and The Springs Church. The food pantry provides food for needy
families who have received vouchers from DFACS and GAM, or have emergency food
needs. The SHCFP served 938 people in 2007, and has served over 838 so far
in 2008.
These are some of the numerous ways
where you can plug-in and participate in the work of sharing the Gospel at the
First United Methodist Church of Oakwood. We value your God given gifts,
talents, and spirit. Come and join us in our work.
