United Methodist Volunteers in Missions

North Central Jurisdiction

teachUM was initiated in 2003 by the United Methodist Volunteers In Mission of the North Central Jurisdiction. It’s objective is to provide mission team service opportunities for those in educational professions. Teachers are needed all over the globe to help instruct both youth and adults and show by example how Christ is part of their lives. Examples of teachUM teams are Vacation Bible Schools, camp counseling for underprivileged children, teaching English as a second language, teaching in United Methodist classrooms around the world . Each year the teachUM steering committee schedules a variety of teams with teaching emphasis both in the U.S. and abroad.

There are several ways to get involved in teachUM opportunities:

  1. 1)  Join a team that will have education as part of their service work - All jurisdictions have a future teams list.  And the teams should specify if there is a teaching component on the team.  Find the NCJ Future Teams list on the About Us Page linked above.  It is color coded the educational teams or those that have an educational component in blue.

  1. 2)  Lead a team that focuses on the education component - the National Project listing and the International project listing both have places that want educational teams. The National one usually wants VBS.  The international sector is a bit different - many of the places in East Europe want teachers - particularly to teach English - but there are other options.  Check out www.umvim.info  both the Project listings are on the left of the map at the top.

  1. 3)  Become an Individual Volunteer - who spends 2 months or longer as a volunteer where they are asking for educational help.  The Individual Volunteer program requires an application, a training session and some reading.  You can learn all about it here : www.individualvolunteers.info or contact Nancy Eubanks  nteubanks@gmail.com with any questions pertaining to this program.

  1. 4)  As part of Disaster Response - there is a training component that focuses on Children in Disaster.  UMCOR asks us to utilize the Children of the Brethren program as it is excellent. http://www.brethren.org/cds/training/  We are offering one of these as part of our Disaster Response Academy, see the Disaster Response page.
