School of Christian Mission FAQ's
What is the purpose of the School of Christian Mission?
School of Christian Mission is an educational experience for United Methodist Women and others wishing to expand their concepts of mission in today's world.
Who plans the School of Christian Mission?
The Women's Division of the General Board of Global Ministries provides a basic plan, recommends resources for study and trains leadership at Regional Schools of Christian Mission. A school committee in each conference is responsible for putting the plan into action.
Do any other conferences have a School of Christian Mission?
They are held every year across the United States. Some schools are sponsored by the conference United Methodist Women and are planned for women only. Others are cooperative and are open to anyone wishing to register. Ours in North Indiana is planned by the United Methodist Women but is open for anyone wishing to register.
What is the difference between Drive-In Day and the School of Christian Mission?
Drive-In Day is meant to be a "sampler" event -- a day long chance to find out what the School of Christian Mission is all about. By using the "plenary" format the School team conveys the spirit and bare bones of the study. In the longer school the study leaders have 8 hours of contact or classroom time and can really concentrate on a fuller understanding of the topic.
So what do you do at School of Christian Mission?
School of Christian Mission includes classes around chosen study themes, worship, large group gatherings, eating together, meeting new people, sharing faith stories, singing, and other planned activities.
What happens after School of Christian Mission?
Just as the conference study leaders are trained to implement the studies at Regional School, local church members are encouraged to take what they learned at the conference School of Christian Mission and spread it around at their local church -- sort of a domino affect -- and use the studies as mission education programming. The annual study topics are great for United Methodist Women programs, mission fairs, Sunday School studies, small group discussions and so on.
And what in the world is ChiMiCa and YoPeMiCa?
(ChiMiCa -- Children's Mission Camp)
(YoPeMiCa -- Young People's Mission Camp)
North Indiana is unique in having a strong tradition of School of Christian Mission programming for children and youth. Kids can accompany an adult School of Christian Mission attendee and take part in age appropriate mission education (and fun!!)
