Newtonville Preschool is committed to being a child centered preschool program. A curriculum implemented through teacher guidance, exploration activities and dramatic play with peers provides for the social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of preschool readiness. Through diversity education, various traditions and cultures will be explored, honored and respected. Communication with parents will be emphasized as an important and necessary component to the program.
Karin Wheatley has a Bachelor of Professional Science in Elementary Education from S.U.N.Y. at Oswego. She has previous experience in developing a program for preschoolers and implementing her lessons as head teacher. Karin is the mother of two children, a member and current President of her local PTA, teaches Sunday School and is a member of her local fire department’s Auxiliary.
Parents are encouraged to actively participate in their child’s preschool experience. You are invited to help with field trips, special class projects, snack preparation; to share a special talent or expertise. Parents are welcome anytime to stop in and visit.
The preschool class for three year olds meets twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00am through 11:30am. The enrollment is limited to 12 children. There are two teachers. Parents are always welcome to participate. The preschool child must be 3 years old by December 1st to enroll.
Main focus for the three’s class... learning classroom routines, expectations, social interactions, learning how to work well together, shapes, colors, introducing letters and numbers, counting by rote, introducing the use of scissors, writing implements, pasting, glueing, and working with hand eye coordination and use of small motor skills.
Preschool Readiness... because our children are all so unique and develop at their own individual rate, there is no right starting age. If your child has reasonable good health, enjoys group play and likes activities such as Sunday school or library story time, he/ she will make a happy adjustment to nursery school.
P.S. (For three and four year olds) Can he/she handle his/her bathroom needs? While our teachers are understanding about the once-in-a-while accident, they do expect the children to be daytime potty trained before entering school.
The preschool class for the four year olds meets three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings form 9:00am through 11:30am. The enrollment is limited to 16 children. There are two teachers. Parents are welcome to participate. The preschool child must be four years old by December 1st to enroll.
Main focus for four’s class... preparing for Kindergarten classroom routines and readiness, more focus on letter and number recognition and writing, writing full name, learning phone number, address and birthday, hand eye coordination, fine motor skills, cutting, pasting glueing, proper holding of writing implements, more focus to detail on projects, being proud of one’s work, practicing zippering, buttoning, snapping and tying. To provide a basic foundation for success in Kindergarten.

School Year - starts the Thursday after Labor Day in September and runs through mid June.
School calendar - We follow the North Colonie School District’s calendar for holidays, vacation breaks and weather closings. Please watch the morning news programs for closing and delays. If North Colonie experiences any delays or closings then Newtonville Nursery School will be closed. To view the calendar click here
Daily Snack - will be provided by the nursery school. We will ask parents for assistance with planning special events, such as Halloween, Holiday and Valentine’s Day parties. Also, special treats for birthdays are welcome. We are sensitive to food allergies and will work with parents to keep all of our children safe.
Field Trips - will be planned for the four’s class and will parallel the current lesson or theme. We do ask for parents to chaperone as we do not have bus transportation. Car seats are mandatory and will be strictly enforced. All parents are welcome to attend each trip. There is no limit to chaperones. We do ask that younger siblings be left in someone else’s care. There may be a nominal fee for both child and parents.
There is a non-refundable $50.00 enrollment fee for the three and four year old classes and this is payable with the submission of an enrollment form. Checks should be made payable to Newtonville Nursery School. (Enrollment fees will be used to alleviate the cost for snacks and school supplies)
Tuition for the 3 year old class: $850.00
Tuition for the 4 year old class: $1000.00
Tuition may be paid in full, quarterly or in ten monthly installments.
If more than one sibling attends Newtonville Nursery School at the same time, a 20% discount will be given to the youngest child.
