New Salem United Methodist Church has a rich history dating back to the early 1800’s. On December 31,1998, a satanic arsonist, responsible for many church burnings in the U. S., set fire to New Salem. The fire completely destroyed the building, but far worse than that, the fire ended a human life. Volunteer firefighter Loy Williams. Mr. William’s bravery and courage will never be forgotten. His memory will forever be a part of New Salem. Satan’s plans to destroy were quickly thwarted. God had a different plan. Headed by Lamar Beard, vice-president of the United Methodist Men Local Missions, volunteers from Washington State to Florida and many places in-between began showing up to rebuild the new church. Local churches and businesses donated many things and held benefits to raise money. Many people stopped by simply because they felt led by God to do so. Christians from many different denominations, and even a group of atheist, joined in what would be an experience to remember! As long as there was a belly there, the New Salem ladies kept it full. As long as there was a heart there, God kept it full. The group of atheist left with a lot to ponder!!! Leave it up to God to know how to get things started. Our first volunteers were a group of Christian Palestinians from Bethlehem. People from our Savior’s birthplace dug the foundation for the new church. Awesome!!! There have been so many wonderful things take place over these past five years, that to name them all would take forever. We, the members of New Salem, thank God for his mercy and grace endureth forever. We also want to thank any and everyone who helped in our rebuilding process. C R 2004 |
