Gary was born in Arcanum, Ohio on March 27, 1939. He grew up in the Evangelical United Brethren Church and accepted Jesus Christ as Savior at the age of eleven. At age fourteen, Gary committed his life to full time Christian service.
Gary graduated from Arcanum High School in 1957. He received an AB Degree from Miami University in 1961. In 1966, he received the Master Degree of Divinity from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
