A nice guy with an alcohol problem that he couldn't handle.
Stepped in the path of a car on a rainy dark night and
died in the ICU before I got there. We were living in WV and
I am still here. Miss this child very much even though I have
two others; but he was my first born.

Jody Wayne Chisum
March 1, 1967--September 8, 1994

On a Thursday, September 8, 1994, my son, Jody Wayne Chisum, quietly and with much courage gave up his battle with AIDS and gently slipped from my arms back to God's. At the time I welcomed the release of his pain and ours. I welcomed the end of all the indignities which Jody endured with patience and a lion's share of bravery. Jody endured so much for so long with no unkind words or anger, and I wish I had praised him more at the moment for his strength. He was an angel and a gentleman at a time when he was entitled to be so much less. He touched to many lives by bringing us together because of this horrible disease called AIDS.

I have cried many tears since Jody died. I did not know anything could hurt as much as this does. A year did not make any difference, nor did five, and neither will ten, twenty, or more. The hole in my heart is too big and part of our family will always be missing. We have all been blessed by Jody's brief time with us and will feel his absence everyday of our lives. We loved him so much.

James Robert "Jimmy" Batts

A Gift From God

Jimmy was a blessing to us in every way. He was the only child we were blessed with, but he was all we needed to make our love and our lives complete. Because of God's grace, we know we will join him someday.
