A Brief History

The New Hope United Methodist Church was formed on November 1, 1990 by the merger of the Zion United Methodist Church of Owensville, MO and the Canaan United Methodist Church of Canaan, MO. Shortly after the forming of the New Hope UMC, a committee was appointed to find a site for a new church building. In 1993 a parcel of land (about 7 acres) was donated to the Church. This parcel of land is the current location of the new church building of the New Hope UMC. On October 16, 1994 a Service of Dedication and Ground Breaking was held and the building project was started in the spring of 1995.

The last worship service to be held in the church's old location (102 W. Washington, Owensville, MO) was held on July 6, 1997. On the following Sunday (July 13, 1997) the congregation began worshipping in the basement of the new building. At that time the upstairs sanctuary, classrooms, and offices had not been completed. On May 24, 1998 the first worship service was held in the sanctuary of the new building and on July 19, 1998 a Service of Consecration was conducted with Bishop Ann Sherer, the residing bishop of the Missouri Area, officiating over the service.

In the Fall of 2004, Rev. Robert Schnase was installed as the new presiding bishop of the Missouri Area.  Bishop Schnase, like Bishop Sherer before him and Bishop Robert Goodrich comes to us from Texas.  Current areas of concern for him and the United Methodist Church in Missouri include healthy, vital, congregations and showing good discipleship by not only bringing people to Christ but increasing their Christian understanding.

The current pastor of New Hope United Methodist Church is Rev. Jackie Asher. Jackie spent 20 years as a Teacher Assistant for Special School District in St. Louis, Missouri before entering the ministry.  She has been married to Wayne Asher for 34 years and they have one grown daughter, Becky, who lives in Columbia.

The congregation of the New Hope United Methodist Church invites you to come and join us in the worship of God and in being a partner with Jesus the Christ in doing the work and mission of bringing God's reign of justice, mercy, and righteousness to all people.
