Bethany began in Tacoma's south end in 1904, and has lived on its present site since 1925.

Founded in a day when folks walked to church and the Methodists planted congregations only a mile or two apart all over Tacoma, Bethany remains committed to ministry in and for its neighborhood.

Our mission has always been about service. Our statement of mission adopted in 1990, says:

Bethany United Methodist Church
is called by God to act as God's servants
to each other and to those in our community.
In order to do this, the Bethany congregation
will need to recognize our role as ministers,
support the members of the congregation
in ministering to others,
and identify further opportunities for service
in the larger community.
