Church History
|
As is true of most churches, the Newborn Methodist Church had its beginning with worship services in the homes of the community. In October 1820, a tract of land was sold to Newborn by Jackson Harwell. A small log church was built near where the present church stands. A white frame building was built on the site of the present building in 1847. This second church was erected by the Newborn Methodist and was dedicated on Sunday, May 29, 1847. The present church sanctuary was built and dedicated in 1903. The noted evangelist Sam P. Jones, who served as pastor in 1878-79, returned to preach and dedicate the church. He preached to a crowd of six to eight people. However, the dedicatory service was delayed until a sufficient offering was received to complete the construction! The educational annex was added in 1949, and added five classrooms and storage space to the church. The fellowship hall was constructed in 1977 and paid for in two years. It was destroyed by a storm in August of 1990, and rebuilt in time for homecoming that fall!! In 1898 the church built a new parsonage on Field Street which has served as the parsonage until today. The Women&rsquos Missionary Society was formed in 1878 and became a member of the Atlanta Foreign Missionary Society, thus making the Newborn organization on of the first women&rsquos groups in the conference. A number of pastors have entered the ministry from Newborn Methodist Church. Including Samuel Holcome (1899), Dr. J.T. Pitts (1900), M.B. Sams (1904), and Charles R. Williams (1939) who served a number of appointments in his forty-three year ministry and returned to Newborn upon his retirement. While Charles L. Allen was never a member of Newborn, he was born in the Newborn parsonage in 1913; Newborn has taken great pride in his achievements as an author, preacher, and pastor. Throughout most of its history, the Newborn Church has been on a circuit with two or more churches. It has been attached at various times to Mansfield, Starrsville, Pennington, and Pitt Chapel. In July of 1894 Newborn became a station church and was served by student pastors supplied from the North Georgia Conference. In December of 1997 Newborn took a bold leap of faith and voted to become a full time appointment. In June of 1998 Newborn became a full time pastorate and received a fully connected Elder as pastor. Newborn United Methodist Church has a rich history of serving God in this historic community. While time have not always been easy, God has always seen us through. Presently, Newborn is going through a time of transition, from a student part time appointment to a full time local pastorate. We are confident that once again God will see us through and lead us on into the future as we continue to seek His will here in this place that we call home.
