The
Church World Service Mission Statement: Through Church World
Service, members of congregations in the USA come together with the ecumenical
family worldwide to witness to and share Christ's love with all people. Founded
in 1946, Church World Service is the relief, development, and
refugee assistance ministry of 36 Christian denominations. Working in partnership with indigenous organizations in more than
80 countries, CWS supports sustainable
self-help development, meets emergency
needs, aids refugees,
and helps address the root causes of poverty and powerlessness. Within the United States, Church World Service assists communities in responding to disasters, resettles refugees, promotes fair national and international policies, provides educational resources, and offers opportunities to join a people-to-people network of local and global caring through participation in CROP WALKS, the TOOLS OF HOPE & BLANKET Program, and the “Gift of the Heart” Kit Program. CWS History. Church World Service was born in the aftermath of World War II. A number of denominations came together to form an agency "to do in partnership what none of us could hope to do as well alone." The mission: Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, comfort the aged, shelter the homeless. CWS follows ethical standards. As an active member of InterAction, the American Council for Voluntary International Action, Church World Service meets and exceeds standards set-forth by InterAction for its members. Administrative costs of CWS are less than 6% of income.
