Attention All Teenagers!

Upcoming Important Event!!!

The New York Annual Conference will be Celebrating Youth on Saturday, June 9, 9:30 - 2:00 at Hofstra University.  The featured speaker is Emmit Young.  Krystal Meyers, a 17-year old Christian rock singer, will perform an acoustic set inside and then a full-blown concert during lunch.  Danton Bankay and his band will perform praise and worship music and The Westchester Steel Drum Band will also be performing.  Check-in starts at 9:30 and there is a free outdoor barbeque at lunchtime.

Bishop Jeremiah Park has challenged all youth to raise money for "Nothing but Nets" a partnership with UMCOR, Sports Illustrated, The Gates Foundation and the NBA, to raise money to buy mosquito nets to protect kids from contracting malaria.  The Bishop's Partnership in Mission will match every dollar raised by youth, up to $10,000.

Dave and I would love to chaperone the youth to this event.  If you are interested in attending, please sign the sheet located on the table on the landing between the sanctuary and the church office.  If you have any questions, please call me or see me during fellowship hour after church.

AND, for anyone who did not come!!!!!!     WE'LL BE BACK in 2009!!!!!!  Don't Miss It!!!

Prison Ministries at Memorial

We continue with our Ministry of the collection of used books and magazines to be donated to prisons in Connecticut.   We ask you to keep this in mind when you finish with your paperbacks/magazines.  There is a bin outside the kitchen for donations.  When it's full we call our contact person Mortimer Laird of Simsbury and he comes to pick them up and delivers them to the prisons.  THANK YOU!!!!!

Peace with Justice Sunday

Peace with Justice Sunday offerings will be collected on June 3 during the Worship Service.  This is one of six churchwide special offerings that are held each year.  Offerings furnish resources for annual conference Swords into Plowshare Centers, provide materials and personnel to help in conflict-management programs and help the General Board of Church and Society in its' work to advocate Peace with Justice in the United States and around the world.

Farmington Food

Pantry Donations

Church and Society/Missions will be accepting food donations for the Farmington Food Pantry on the third Sunday of every month. The food will be collected at our Sunday service as part of our weekly offering.  The items requested by the Panty will be published in the bulletin prior to the collection Sunday. If you are unable to attend worship or forget your donation, you may drop them off in the marked bin outside the kitchen. Items requested by the Pantry for the May 20th collection are canned fruit, applesauce, and healthy school lunch snacks (individual packages of raisins, fruit, applesauce, cookies or crackers).

The Farmington Food Pantry was founded thirty years ago as a joint effort of the Farmington Police Department and First Church of Christ Congregational in Unionville. In October 2006 the food pantry moved to 75 Main Street, Farmington.  The First Church of Christ Congregational, Farmington, donated the new 400 square foot space, located in Amistad Hall, attached to the Sarah Porter Memorial Building, to the Pantry.  The pantry operates independently from the church and is the pantry for the Town of Farmington.

The larger space is more accessible and includes a storage area allowing for more inventory of food to be kept on hand.  Most importantly, the expanded space has been designed to allow clients to select their own groceries and necessities. The pantry serves approximately 50 families a month.

The Farmington Food Pantry is always looking for volunteers to stock shelves, help with client shopping, and pick up and deliver food to the pantry.  If you would be interested in volunteering at the Pantry, please call or e-mail Jan Colturi, at 673-3873 teshingle@sbcglobal.net

A Reminder About

Fundraising at Memorial

An Important Read for EVERYONE

At the October, 2006, the Church Council of MUMC approved the following criteria for equitable fundraising and disbursement of those funds at Memorial.

A.        All fundraisers at MUMC must be approved in advance by Stewardship and Church Council.

B.         All requests for fundraising must be submitted in writing to Stewardship Committee and/or Chair.  Forms will be provided for this purpose and must be submitted providing all pertinent information including recipient.  Stewardship Chair or committee representative will then present the proposed fundraiser to the Church Council for its approval.

C.        All fundraisers must have a specific recipient(s) to be submitted on the form.

D.        For MUMC sponsored fundraisers 10% of funds raised will be applied to the operating budget.

E.         The 10% allotment will not apply to monies which are being solicited for outside recipients – e.g. Habitat for Humanity, Relay For Life, UMCOR.

F.         Solicitation or sales of items/ fundraisers by individuals for personal causes during the coffee hour shall be prohibited.

Forms and a full explanation of the procedures are available at the table on the landing.  If you have any questions concerning these directives, please feel free to contact the chair of Stewardship, Rich McGinnis, or the chair of Church Council, Jill Rendell.

2007 Church Budget Update

In January of this year the Church Council approved a balanced budget of $381,600, to pay expenses of $381,585.  The major expense items in the budget include Conference apportionments of $58,000, salaries of $156,000, and church maintenance of $120,000.  Through the first four months, total income received was $144,300, to pay expenses of $124,400.  It should be noted that conference apportionments of approximately $11,600 have been deferred so that fixed expenses over the next several months can be assured of being paid.  Monthly salaries of $13,000 and church maintenance expenses of approximately $10,000 must be paid each and every month, which represents 72% of the budget.  Included in church maintenance are heat, electricity, mortgage payments, and other normal ongoing maintenance expenses.  Since 80% of the Church’s budget comes from individual pledge commitments ($306,000), it is important that these payments be made in a timely manner, especially over the upcoming summer months.  Through the first four months, approximately 29% of total pledge commitments have been paid.  Please continue to keep your pledge payments current so that we can meet the financial requirements of the Church.

Honey & Hope

Bees changed Victor Kpe's life. They helped his family, added to his community in Ghana, and now he's telling other farmers how bees can do the same for them. Mr. Kpe first started keeping bees in 1993 after receiving training from an outside organization. Each year he used the profits from selling honey, beeswax, and propolis, the glue bees collect from certain tree buds, to grow his business. His extra income allowed him to send his children to better schools and to start construction on a new home. Mr. Kpe also added a corn mill to his village's assets, improving the life of his community as well.

Mr. Kpe has trained 180 farmers in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Democratic Republic of Congo through UMCOR's Sustainable Agriculture and Development program since 2003. He is among a group of trainers who teach appropriate sustainable agriculture techniques to farmers in Africa. This innovative training program teaches others not only how to build, keep, and maintain hives using local materials, but it also shows the students how to share what they've learned with others, thus multiplying the benefits.

You can ad to this multiplication effort by giving to the Sustainable Agriculture and Development program, UMCOR Advance #982188.

This is the fifth in a series of 12 articles this year about UMCOR, United Methodist Committee on Relief. See www.umcor.org. 100% of donations go the program you donate to.
