December 27, 2004 The United Methodist Committee on
Relief is responding
through its ecumenical partners to the catastrophe in South Asia. On Sunday,
December 26, a massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake off the west coast of the
northern Indonesian island of Sumatra caused tidal waves that have so far
claimed the lives of more than 22,000 people in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India,
Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives and Bangladesh, according to news reports.
Thousands of people are still missing and tens of thousands of people have been
displaced. The full extent of the disaster is still not known in more remote
areas in Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia, where ecumenical partners are
responding.
