Mission of the Year

If you work for a company that matches employee charitable giving, you just might be able to double...triple...or even quadurple your gift to United Methodist mission! Many companies match the gifts of their employees as part of their corporate responsibility and/or community involvement. Each company has their own matching formula and procedures, which they publicize to their employees. Most of these companies will not match the gifts that you give to your local church.
A little known fact is that the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) and two of its units, the Women’s Division and United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), are separately incorporated 5019©(3) non-profit organizations. Most companies require this IRS status for their matching gift programs.
A number of companies have increased the percentage of match specifically for contributions made in response to September 11. For more information on those companies, see the General Board of Global Ministries web article.
Three easy action steps
1. You make a contribution to GBGM, Women’s Division, or UMCOR.
2. You fill out a matching-contribution form at your company’s human resources or community relations office and submit it to the office for matching funds, along with a copy of a cancelled check/credit card receipt as proof of your contribution.
3. Your company disburses matching funds directly to GBGM, Women’s Division, or UMCOR.
We can all help to increase the corporate matching program by urging our families, friends, and local church members to take advantage of the matching program in their places of work. Tune in to your local public television station during pledge drives to find out which companies in your community match individual contributions.
If a company needs proof that GBGM, the Women’s Division, or UMCOR is designated a tax-exempt nonprofit organization, please call 211-870-3637 to get a copy of the IRS determination letter.
Please let the board know when you have submitted a matching gift form to your company so that they can request the GBGM be added to the donor list.

“Nothing But Nets” campaign aimed
at reducing malaria deaths of children in Africa
United Methodist bishops are urging United Methodists and persons of good will to skip lunch on Africa Malaria Day, April 25, and use their lunch money to buy a lifesaving bed net. Malaria kills a child every 30 seconds in Africa but bed nets are the most cost-effective way to protect children from the mosquitoes who carry this killer disease.
The people of The United Methodist Church are a founding partner in the “Nothing But Nets” campaign. Every dollar given to the initiative is used to purchase and distribute bed nets for children in Africa. Each $10 donation will pay for the purchase and distribution of an insecticide-treated bed net to a family in Africa, as well as education about its use. A challenge grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match contributions dollar for dollar up to $3 million.
Downloadable resources including suggestions about how churches can get involved, graphics, and worship materials are available at the UM “Nothing But Nets” webpage. April 25 has been designated as Africa Malaria Day, and for the first time President George W. Bush has proclaimed the day as Malaria Awareness Day in the United States.
United Methodists have been in mission in Africa for more than 160 years, operating hospitals, clinics, schools and mission centers. Go to the UMC website to learn more.

NMU Wesley House students are excited to go on an alternative spring break! Spring Break Out at Mountain T.O.P. is a mission experience tailored specifically for college groups while deepening their relationship with Christ. Mountain T.O.P. is an Interdenominational Christian Mission, affiliated with the Tennessee Conference of the United Methodist Church, dedicated to rural life ministry in the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee. It grew out of the experience of a United Methodist Youth Pastor and his group. They started a home repair ministry that has become a camp for all ages.
Monday of spring break when students from across the nation gather at the camp. Two days are spent working with the facilities Mountain T.O.P. uses during the Youth Summer Ministry. This involves repair and rehabilitation work on the cabins, landscaping the grounds, painting, and general maintenance. The remainder of the week is spent in the county working directly with Cumberland Mountain families' home repair. The Camp Staff provides worship and processing the days work every evening after dinner. A favorite experience at Mountain T.O.P. has been mid-week worship in a congregation in the Cumberland Mountain area.
Costs to register for the week are $185.00 per student plus we will need money food, gas, and lodging on route. We will also need to borrow tools and a 6 passenger vehicle.
Wesley students are having a pumpkin pie sale and spaghetti lunch on Sunday, November 18 at Marquette Grace UMC. The lunch (free-will offering) is right after church at noon. The pies are preordered and can be picked up at Grace from noon to 3. To order a pie, or to let us know that you would like to be at the lunch, please contact Margie West at 906-226-3314. Donations for the trip can be sent to Margie West at Wesley House, 811 West Fair Ave. Marquette, MI. 49855. Thank you so much for your support of our United Methodist Student Ministry at Wesley House!

Mary Peterson from the First United Methodist Church in Birmingham is leading a team the last week of March.
