Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church
Mt. Pleasant Church was built in 1873 and has served as a place for
neighbors to gather in prayer and worship.
Let's take a step back in time and look
at our history............
Early 1800's
In the early 1800's settlers from New
England began traveling to an area known as the Western Reserve in search of
better land. Six investors bought all of Brunswick Township, a total of
15922 acres for $26,087 or $1.64 per acre. Many of the first settlers came
from Connecticut but after a few years many German immigrants moved into the
county and agriculture was the leading occupation. Medina County encountered
a steady growth in population. The city of Brunswick was also growing and so
was the need to have a church that could accommodate the Christian beliefs
of the immigrants in our community.
1860-1870
In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of The United States of
America. In 1862 President Lincoln issued The Emancipation Proclamation that
declared the freedom of all slaves in any State of The Confederate States of
America, this led to the Civil War. In 1863 following a six-week siege,
Confederate forces surrendered Vicksburg to Union troops led by Ohio
native Ulysses S. Grant. In 1863 The Battle of Buffington Island was fought
, this was the only battle of our Civil War fought on Ohio soil. In 1864
President Lincoln promoted Ulysses S. Grant to supreme commander of all
Union forces. In 1864 Union forces under the leadership of Ohio native
William T. Sherman captured Atlanta. In 1865 Robert E. Lee surrendered
the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House,
Virginia to end the Civil War. In 1865 John Wilkes Booth assassinated
President Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. In 1868 Ulysses S.
Grant was elected to the first of two terms as President of The United
States of America. In 1869 the Cincinnati Redstockings were founded, they
were the first professional baseball team. In 1870 The Ohio State University
was born, originally known as The Ohio Agriculture and Mechanical College
the name was changed by the Ohio General Assembly.
1870's
In 1870 a small group
of people joined together and formed what is now known as Mt. Pleasant
United Methodist Church. During the construction of the church building, the
small congregation met in the Mt. Pleasant Schoolhouse. Norman Chidsey
provided most of the lumber for the construction of the building and the
basement was excavated by the power of a man and his mule.
Changing Needs
Mt. Pleasant has
undergone numerous changes over the years. These changes were not just
physical but were also denominational, economic and community changes. Mt.
Pleasant has been a member of four different conferences through the years.
The first conference was The Western Reserve United Brethren followed by The
East Ohio United Brethren, the East Ohio Evangelical United Brethren and
finally, The East Ohio United Methodist. We have had 64 pastors
including one of the first, if not the first female pastor in the area.
We have been a member of 11 different districts with 29 District
Superintendents. The biggest physical change to our church
building has been the addition of the part of the building which now houses
our parlor, nursery, pastors office and the entrance to the sanctuary.
Our Mission Throughout the Years
Throughout the years
the church members and Pastor's who have served at Mt. Pleasant have been
adapting to the needs of our community always with an obligation to bear a
faithful Christian witness to Jesus Christ.
