Threat of Storms Doesn't Dampen the Fun at the Church Picnic
June 1, 2008

Despite scattered thunderstorms around the city, the people of Mount Vernon flocked to Ballou Park to enjoy a long, leisurely Sunday evening of visiting, eating, and playing.

An estimated 120 people enjoyed Jesse Wall's cut-and-cooked-on-the-spot French fries, along with grilled burgers and hotdogs and the trimmings, and a diet-challenging spread of homemade desserts.

After pastor David Palmer's prayer, the feasting began, the skies cleared, and the temperature fell into the 70s.

Kids of all ages jumped in the Spacewalk castle, and Mount Vernon's youth were joined by some considerably older – and younger – players for a softball game. Horseshoes clanged, and one of Mount Vernon's youngest members, infant Faith, was admired and passed around.
