Sundaes on Sunday:
The Church Council invites everyone to join in on a series of Sundays for an ice cream sundae in the church Fellowship Hall and to informally meet and greet our new pastor, Barry Foster, and his wife, Susan.
The church membership has been divided into four "neighborhoods," with each assigned one of four Sundays and notified by letter. The first groups met on July 6 and July 13, and the others are scheduled for August 10 and August 24.
If you can't attend when your neighborhood is scheduled, please attend on one of the other dates!
Children's House: Children's House is Mount Vernon's preschool, which includes classes for children from ages 9 months through 4 years. Registration for the 2008-2009 season is underway now.
Director Bonnie Williams says, "Call, or stop by and visit, if you are interested. We have a wonderful staff and curriculum, and the best children this side of heaven!"
Please feel free to call Bonnie, (434) 793-3713, with any questions, to enroll a child, or to put children on the wait list.
During the September-May season, Crib/Toddler class meets on Thursdays; Twos class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and Threes and Fours class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
Triangle Fellowship, Mount Vernon's Supper Club:
The supper club has been a big hit! If you were unable to be a part of the initial group, don't worry. Groups have formed for July, August, and September, but later there will be an opportunity to join a group for October-December.
Call Gayle Morris to add your name to the list. (If you're already participating, you don't need to apply again.)
Here's how the supper club works: after people sign up, there's a drawing to form random groups of six participants. Each group then decides when they want to meet, who will host, and what time. Each host has the option of inviting two additional people, who could be church visitors, neighbors, or friends. Each group meets once a month for three months. Then we all switch groups and meet with a different set of people.
The supper club is designed to allow everyone who participates to make new friends and get to know each other better.
Knitting group: Mount Vernon's Knit & Stitch group meets twice a month, on first and fourth Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Hamlin-Buchanan Room (next to the church office).
Since this group started meeting in January 2004, the members have made and donated more than 50 sweaters and caps, as well as Katrina squares, helmet liners for servicemen, and lap throws for special friends at Mount Vernon. They enjoy sharing food and fun, as well as knitting know-how.
You don't have to be an accomplished knitter to join them. In fact, if you've never done any knitting but would like to learn, come and someone will teach you. Bring a lunch. Please call Nancy Evans or the church office, (434) 793-6824, for more information.
Mount Vernon Foundation scholarships:
The scholarship recipients for 2008-2009 are: Veena Aswath, Ashlee Clark, Erika Culley, Rebecca Daniels, Taylor Daniels, Andrea Doones, Linzy Dunn, Denise Fitzgerald, Lesley Harden, Cari Hensley, Ben Hughes, Michael McGeough, Meredith Ray, Debrielle Williams, and Reshawn Woodson.
Names in bold type are members of Mount Vernon Church.
Be a lay reader: If you would like to be a lay reader of the Sunday Scriptures, for either the 8:30 or the 11:00 a.m. service of worship, please call the church office, (434) 793-6824, or leave a note on the office desk. We'd like to have more readers for both services!
