Hurricane Katrina mission trip ~ April, 2008

Our team of 35 persons from Danville and Chatham
traveled to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi during spring break.

We were assigned to Waveland, where a 44-foot storm surge destroyed 70 percent
of the homes
. One homeowner remarked, "People around here think the rest
of the country has forgotten about us. Your coming here gives us hope."

During a stop in Atlanta,
we attended Martin Luther
King Jr.'s church,
Ebenezer Baptist,
for Easter services.

We saw a number of new homes in Waveland, but also many empty concrete slabs
where homes once stood and a large number of people still living in temporary housing.
Many shopping centers and businesses are deserted, many street signs are missing,
roads are torn up, and piles of debris are a familiar sight.

We left families with a new roof, siding, kitchen cabinets,
and sealed decks and porches ... and a renewed sense of hope.
