Nicaraguan Service Project

Report on 2006 Trip (June 26 - July 5)

The group left San Francisco Airport at 1:50 a.m. early Monday morning June 26 and landed in San Salvador at 8:02 a.m. local time. The Managua flight took about one hour from San Salvador. Martha Parker reported via cell phone text message that the group had landed in Managua, "All ok."

On Tuesday afternoon, 6/27, Martha Parker reported via cell phone text message, "(Second day @ Dario) First day working. Building wall. Frisbee & Dance @ SOL."
On Wednesday, 6/28, Martha Parker wrote via email, "We have now had three days here in this beautiful country of Nicaragua. We have been welcomed by the SOL community center where we are staying, sleeping, and eating. We have been welcomed by the El Jobo community where we are helping build their secondary school."
"We are being made at home by learning dances and how to make tortillas. We have had a few minor injuries, mostly scratches. We have been blessed that what has gone wrong has been handled with grace. I am trying to behave myself and we are all having a wonderful time."
Just after midnight on Wednesday, July 5, the main body of participants returned to San Francisco airport, with the last three arriving two days later (same flight).

Report by Robin Truitt on 2005 Trip (June 11-21)

Mt. Tam UMC's 17-person Grupo del SOL (Seeds of Learning) laid the literal and figurative foundation of awesome teamwork, cultural understanding and caring for others of which this entire congregation can be proud. As a group, and as representatives of this church, we worked tirelessly, got along great, and shared our smiles and skills with the terrific people of the Dario and Las Delicias communities in Nicaragua.
