Letter from Rev. David R. Hicks:
SOME MEMORIES OF WALK #112
Every walk I have ever heard described has always had a generous sprinkling of “awesome’s” and “fantastic’s” within that description. Walk #112 clearly maintained that tradition! Having been a late addition to the team, I thank God for the opportunity to spend those three days with these creative and enthusiastic women and a superb team!
Did I say enthusiastic? After candle lighting they were still partying at 2 a.m.! Whenever we sang, they sang with gusto and abandon, they blessed my heart time after time just being with them on this walk. I thought they really got into their table discussions too. I was surprised really, on my walk it took us most of Friday to “jell” and open up a bit to each other. I saw some of these women really sharing almost from the beginning. Not to say there wasn’t some “hiddeness” here and there, but I thought they got down to it remarkably well.
Most memorable moment to me? Lisa Barth’s talk with Jim in the building covering her with his prayers while she spoke. Lisa spoke from the heart about her struggles with God as Jim’s cancer story has unfolded and she really laid it out before the ladies. Jim knew how hard some of this must have been for her and he was there to anoint her in the chapel, pray for her while she spoke, and greet her with a kiss when she returned from the conference room. Lots of Kleenex used around the room! A very special moment I’ll remember always.
Dying moments? Lots of tears, some real break throughs…and a few struggles. Kevin did a great job with the communion and we all were touched by the service. This one is always very special to me, as I am still dealing with the issue I offered there to God. The difference is, now I have “my big brother Jesus” walking by my side.
Many thanks to Cindy Brett who “twisted my arm” until I agreed to be a spiritual director! Let me tell you folks, if Cindy wants you on a team, just go ahead and agree, I think she has a private line to “the heavenly home office!”
Also, Kevin, Naomi, and Tina my fellow SD’s. We made a great team, I though. Each of us is different, and yet we complemented each other so well. God really put us together, and His work needed each of our gifts and graces.
OK, can you tell now why I though Walk #112 was so awesome? I’ve been on a “spiritual high” all week. It’s been quite a challenging five days so far, but the memories of this special weekend and the way in which God impacted so many lives, to see these women turned on to Him and eager to serve, has carried me along even though I still haven’t gotten to make up the sleep I lost.
Looking forward to seeing all the prayer folks in the prayer chapel next month! Community members, this is such a special time with the Lord, I never leave without feeling I have received more blessings than I could have given while I was there. Know a new depth and power in your prayer life, be there!
"Accept that you are where you are and what you are because of your own choices and decisions."
-–Brian Tracy
"Our own heart, and not other men's opinion, forms our true honor." – Samuel Taylor Coleridge
One last thing deserves mention, I haven't talked to Nashville, but I think we may now hold the Emmaus record for the oldest pilgrim. Eleanor Holmes is 96 years old and was on this walk. She still lives by herself on "a mountain top" outside Bryson city and was a real delight to have among our pilgrims. She is a true German Comtessa, sung opera professionally, imigrated in 1932, and today is a published poet and writer. Walk #112 wouldn't have been the same without Eleanor!
Blessings,

From the Chairman:
Hello to Everyone!
I hope your summer was a blessing. We spent most of the summer in Mexico but can't wait to be with our Emmaus Family.
Please pray as often as you can for God to reveal himself to you. I am praying for a change in the way we worship and conduct services. We need to pray for a breakthrough, but we cannot pray for a break-though unless we're been broken ourselves. Breakthroughs only come to broken people who are not pursuing their own ambition but who are after the purposes of God.
God is willing to reveal Himself to you but it's not going to be a cheap blessing. You will have to lay down and die. He can only come close to you to the degree you are willing to die. You need to forget about whose around you and abandon the normal worship. God wants people who are hot after his heart. (Acts 13:22)
You can seek for His blessings an d play with his toys, or you can say, "No Daddy, I don't just want the blessing; I want you! I want you! I want you to come close. I want you to touch my eyes, touch my heart, and change me, Lord. I am tired of me the way I am, because if I can change - the world can change."
Remember, we alway talk about "life" in our worship - but maybe that's what man wants. What if God wants death? It is "death through repentance and brokenness that ushers in the presence of God and causes you to draw near to the Lord and yet live.
I can't wait to "die" with all of you at Mt. Top on walks this Fall - May the Presence of God bless you and your family.
Roy

| Dr. Robert Tuttle to Speak
November 9-12, 2003 The Harrison-Shaw Preaching Mission at Trinity UMC in
Asheville will feature Dr. Robert Tuttle. 25-30 years ago, after doing a
Cursillo weekend, Dr. Tuttle was asked to take this Catholic approach to
renewal and adapt it to a more Wesleyan approach. He wrote the outlines for
the clergy talks and called them the Walk to Emmaus. Since then he has
written "Sanctity without Starch" (Bristol House) to flesh out those
outlines. Dr. Tuttle will speak at the preaching mission each night
beginning at 7PM.
Dr. Robert Tuttle, Jr. (Bob) was born in North Carolina, the son of a
United Methodist minister. After his undergraduate degree at Duke
University, he then completed graduate degrees at Garrett-Evangelical Theological
Seminary and Wheaton Graduate School Of Theology before completing a Ph.D.
degree at the University of Bristol in England.
He then pastured churches in North Carolina and Colorado before
beginning his teaching career at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena,
California. Since that time Bob has taught at the Oral Roberts Graduate School of
Theology, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and Asbury Theological
Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky before moving to the Asbury Florida Campus in
2000.
He spends most of his time teaching and writing, but travels once a month to
teach and preach at conferences, universities, and local churches around the
world. He has preached and/or taught in nearly every state in the US and in
over 30 countries.
Dr. Tuttle is committed to Christ and His Church; His understanding of the
Christian faith has led him to a ministry of sharing the good news of what
God has done for us in Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit available
through personal faith in Him.
Bob and his wife, Dianne, have homes near Asheville, North Carolina
and Orlando, Florida where they enjoy entertaining, gardening, fishing
and visiting with family (four grown children) and friends. |

Our NC Congressman, Charles H. Taylor has proposed
drafting and presenting legislation now dubbed the
"Pledge and Prayer Amendment" that would add the right
to say the Pledge of Allegiance and Pray in Public Schools
(and post the Ten Commandments and Nativity scenes on
government property) an amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The text of the Amendment is as follows:
"To secure the people's right to acknowledge God according to the
dictates of conscience:
-The people retain the right to pray and to recognize their religious
beliefs, heritage, and tradition on public property, including schools
-The United States and the States shall not establish any official
religion nor require any person to join in prayer or religious activity."
If you would like additional updates on this or any other issue,

NC WALK TO EMMAUS FOR THE DEAF
DeColores,
My name is Kay Dunlap. Piedmont Walk to Emmaus #40, Table of Naomi.
I am working with Vergil Daughtery from the Methodist Conference offices
in Lake Junaluska to develop and start a Walk to Emmaus for the Deaf in North Carolina. While we need your prayers and support in this effort our current need is for people
with good sign language skills who have already participated in an Emmaus Walk
and would be willing to participate in a Deaf Walk.
Would you please send this out asking those fellow pilgrims with good sign language
skills to contact me. Please feel free to give them my e-mail address.
Or if you have other suggestions on how to contact fellow signing pilgrims please
let me know. I am always open to suggestions.
Thank you for any help you can offer and may God bless.
Until All Know His Love,
Kay Dunlap

URGENT PRAYER REQUEST:
Jim Barth has been in excruciating pain that seems to get worse by
the day. Jim and Lisa are considering a drastic procedure scheduled to
permanently destroy nerves in his abdomen so he will no longer feel the pain.
They had considered this procedure earlier when they believed that the source
of the pain was tumor. Jim's last CT scan showed that the tumors
continue to shrink. Their concern now is that the pain is from something
besides tumor pain. The pain has reached the point that Jim cannot eat
at all. Two to three bites of food starts a cascade of uncontrollable pain,
leading Lisa to think he may have an intestinal strictures or a blockage
of some sort.
Lisa became a bit more concerned when Jim's home health nurse realized
he had used more than 2500 mg IV morphine for pain this week.
And the pain is uncontrolled.
Please pray for wisdom and guidance for the doctors and for ourselves
in regards to a better diagnosis of where the pain is coming from and the
best treatment.
The gastroenentologist requesting further tests. Jim is scheduled for an
upper GI and small bowel follow-through. This tells me that the review of the
CT scan revealed something. Please pray that the results of this reveal
an easy fix.
Thanks and God bless you all
We love you all
Jim and Lisa Barth Update 8/29 His test this morning showed no intestinal blockage, but did show an ulcer in his duodenum. We are praying for a miraculous healing. The doctor that did the test is referring him back to the gastroenterologist for an endoscopy to diagnose the ulcer. Best case scenario - it's caused by acid or H.pylori or something innocuous. The worst case would be that it's tumor eroding through the wall of the duodenum. We're praying against that. Thank you for your prayers. We feel them.
Pray for Barbara Kennedy
She has cancer and is now waiting for the surgeon to let her know
when he can do the surgery. I am asking our sisters and brothers of
Emmaus to pray that the surgery will be a success and that they can
get all the cancer. She knows the Lord and is active in His work.
Thank you. In Christ's Love, Dixie Barker (walk 110)
This is a request for prayer for dear friends of ours in New Mexico. Peter is a pharmacist and he has recently found out he has thyroiditis. One of the symptoms caused him to tire to the point of (almost) collapse. He was working alone in the pharmacy, and he stole, and took some amphetamines to help him through the shift. He is now in a rehab unit unable to be in contact with his wife and teenage daughter. He will probably lose his job, and may have criminal charges brought against him. They are beside themselves, and desparately need God's intervention to help them through this crisis. He is a good person who made a serious error in judgement. Please pray for him and his family.
Mike & Barbara McDonald (walks 107 and 108)
There will be no music workshop during the next men's walk.
There will be one on Saturday at 1 or 2 (depending on lunch etc.) of
the next women's walk in November.
Thank You, Steve Shaffer
