DVD MOVIE ALERT: THE GOLDEN COMPASS
There is a new "children's movie" DVD for sale called THE GOLDEN COMPASS. It is written by Phillip Pullman, an athiest arthor who belongs to secular humanist societies. He opposes C. S. Lewis's Chronical's of Narnia and has written a trilogy to show the other side. The movie has been watered down to appeal to kids and their parents in the hope that they will buy his trilogy where in the last book children kill God and everyone can do as they please. Nicole Kidman stars in the movie so it will probably be heavily advertised. This is a warning that you probably won't hear in the regular TV advertisements.
Philip Pullman of England is an avowed atheist and his objective is to bash Christianity and promote atheism. He has made remarks that he wants to kill God in the minds of children, and that's what his books are all about. Conservative British columnist Peter Hitchens labeled Pullman "The Most Dangerous Author in Britain" and described him as the writer "the atheists would have been praying for, if atheists prayed.
This movie is a light version of the first book, which is the least offensive of the three books. The second book of the trilogy is THE SUBTLE KNIFE and the third book is THE AMBER SPYGLASS. Each book reveals more and more regarding Pullman's view of God.
In the trilogy, a young girl becomes enmeshed in an epic struggle against a nefarious Church known as the Magisterium. Another character, an ex-nun, describes Christianity as
"a very powerful and convincing mistake." In the last book, a boy and girl are depicted representing Adam and Eve who kill God, who is called YAHWEH. Jesus isn't mentioned in any of the books, although Pullman has hinted that He or a God-son might figure in a forthcoming sequel. His fundamental objection is to religious tyranny and its rejection of this world in favor of an idealized afterlife, regardless of creed. As one of the novel's pagan characters puts it, "Every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling."
THE GOLDEN COMPASS will seem mild when you view it, but that's been done on purpose. Movie moguls have made an effort to avoid angering Christians and to make money at the boxoffice. Pullman's publishers are hoping that parents will take their children to see the movie, that they will enjoy the movie and then the children will want the books for Christmas. That's the hook. The gloves are off in the book. Pullman says he wants the children to read the books and decide against God and the kingdom of heaven. If you decide that you do not want to support something like this, then boycott the movie and the books.
The film is based on Northern Lights (released in the U.S. as The Golden Compass), the first offering in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy of children's books, a series that follows the adventures of a streetwise girl who travels through multiple worlds populated by witches, armor-plated bears, and sinister ecclesiastical assassins to defeat the oppressive forces of a senile God, YAHWEH.
It would be a mistake to discount the impact these books could have. Books of the trilogy have sold more than 15 million copies around the world, with Northern Lights winning the Carnegie Medal for Children's Literature in 1995 and in 2007 being awarded the 'Carnegie of Carnegies' for the best children's book of the past 70 years.The Amber Spyglass, the final book of the series, won The Whitbread Prize in 2001, making it the first children's book to do so. The trilogy is or will soon be available in most public school and community libraries
The series' author, Philip Pullman, averred that "I don't profess any religion; I don't think it's possible that there is a God; I have the greatest difficulty in understanding what is meant by the words 'spiritual' or 'spirituality.'" Critics of Pullman's books point to the strong anti-religion and anti-God themes they incorporate, and although literary works are subject to a variety of interpretations, Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003 interview that "My books are about killing God."

The following reportedly was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.
I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees.
It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in
Malibu . If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.
I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.
Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship Nick and Jessica and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where Nick and Jessica came from and where the America we knew went to.

CHECK IT OUT BEFORE SENDING IT OUT
If you have a computer with internet access and well meaning friends then from time to time
they probably forward jokes, events and stories to you via email. My email box regularly receives
religious themed stories that often witness to grace in response to faith or the consequences of
disbelief. You know, "Man thinking of suicide gets miraculous phone call from God" or "Lightning
strikes church during sermon after preacher identifies thunder as the voice of God".
These events or stories are often presented as fact and are worth pondering until these or
similar words appear, "If you love Jesus you will send this to ten people...". What's up with this?
Never requesting to receive this story, my friend emailed me a problem. Either don't forward this
story to ten friends and try not to feel guilty for not loving Jesus. Or quickly wash hands of
it by sending it out.
First, friends shouldn't pressure friends so I erase the "send to ten" demand from the email
before emailing. Friends can then choose to forward or trash without any guilt.
Second, I want to know whether or not the story I am getting pressure to forward is fact or fiction.
How can someone determine that? I wish there were a place I could go and check the story out.
Fortunately, there is an internet site that researches stories like these. It is at:
http://www.snopes.com/religion/religion.asp
The newest stories may not have had time for researching so wait.
But at least you can try to check it out before you send it out ...
and remember, Jesus will always love you
whether you send it out or not.
By the way ... the "Man thinking of suicide gets miraculous phone call from God" is false and
the "Lightning strikes church during sermon after preacher identifies thunder as the voice of God" is true.

What does it mean to give MORE than 100%? Ever wonder
about those people who say they are giving more than 100%? We have all been
in situations where someone wants you to give over 100%. How about
achieving 101%? What equals 100% in life?
Here's a little mathematical formula that might help you answer these

HINTON CENTER PRICES
In an effort to better communicate with all members of the community, we are
including some policies so that everyone will be aware of them.
The cost for sponsorship is being increased. These costs will be as
follows:
To sponsor a pilgrim: $120.00
To be on a team: $145.00
To come and serve: $4.00 per meal
$27.00 per night
$113.00 to stay for the whole weekend.
We do not want anyone to feel like they cannot participate so if you need a
scholorship please contact the registrars.
As a sponsor it is your duty to gather agape letters for your
pilgrim. We ask that
these be letters only! No gifts, books, t-shirts, etc.
If you have something special you would like to give to a pilgrim
please give it to
them on the way home Sunday evening.
Contact with your pilgrim should be as limited as possible over the
weekend. If
you are serving during meal times, please do not ask your pilgrim or
any pilgrims
for that matter how is it going, etc.
Due to copyright laws we are have changed our before meal and after meal
blessing. We sing the songs suggested by the International Walk
to Emmuas organization. Words, music and sound samples can be found on their website.
The team selection committee is trying to avoid having anyone serve
on back to
back walks. This can not be avoided at times but it is the goal they
strive for.
If you have any questions about these policies or any thing else,
please get ahold
of a board member. The names and phone numbers are listed at the bottom of
this news letter.
